Temporary delay

Most people are familiar with the phrase, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." But who has ever heard, "When the economy gets ugly, job-seekers get scared"? Makes sense though, doesn't it?

State of fear

Usually, American presidents use their annual State of the Union address as a report card for the government.

Paid connection

The university's proposed Ethernet fee for August is unfortunate, but because of increased use on campus, an added expense is necessary to cover the expansion of cost.

Losing battle

It's heartbreaking to hear East Lansing school officials announce budget problems will bring the likely close of Spartan Village Elementary School less than one year after community members fought tooth and nail to keep the building open. East Lansing Public Schools Superintendent Tom Giblin said Monday the district's preliminary plan to compensate for a projected $4.2 million budget shortfall in the next fiscal year includes the closing of Spartan Village Elementary, 1460 Middlevale Road, the laying off of about 30 teachers and restructuring the district. In May, the East Lansing school board voted to downsize the Spartan Village school from a kindergarten-to-sixth-grade elementary to a kindergarten-to-second-grade school.

Looming layoffs

Potential layoffs have been on the minds of many members of the Clerical-Technical Union of MSU. Union members are expected to meet today to discuss negotiations with university officials.

Helpful hikes

Although the state government does spend a lot of money on unnecessary things, cutting government spending is not an end-all answer to the deficit the state has at hand.

Intruder alarm

East Lansing police might be jumping the gun by airing their gut reactions before concrete evidence is on hand.

Humble hall

MSU has taken the first step into expanding on-campus housing. The university is possibly adding a seventh residence hall to the Brody Complex within three to five years.

Uninvited guest

Although health officials say meningitis is a rare disease, the lethal sickness has become a common guest at MSU. There have been six cases of meningitis on campus since 1996, three resulting in death.

Call for peace

It seems the road to peace could take an unexpected turn through France and Germany - two nations with a hostile history - after the two countries celebrated 40 years of reconciliation Wednesday.

Fast fiscal fix?

Taxing items sold on the Internet should not be used as a quick fix to repair a seriously injured state budget.

Aversive ads

MSU President M. Peter McPherson was right Tuesday to criticize a hateful flier posted in Shaw Hall as "reprehensible, cruel and degrading." There is no room for racism on this campus and blatantly racist acts should not be tolerated. The flier, which was found on Jan.

Budget back ups

The state government hasn't been shy about passing the buck of hard economic times on to Michigan municipalities and state-subsidized institutions.

COMMENTARY

Anti-war action

America is beginning to awaken from the slumber of taking political matters too lightly. Freezing temperatures did not stop nearly 1,000 protesters from gathering in front of Michigan's Capitol on Saturday for the Greater Lansing Network against War in Iraq's "Solidarity Walk." It also didn't stop the tens-of-thousands sized-crowd from an anti-war rally and march in Washington, D.C. Many protesters made signs such as "Drop Bush, Not Bombs" and "Weapons of Mass Destruction, Who Used Them First?" to show their outrage against the conflict with Iraq.

COMMENTARY

Valued vaccines

MSU has taken a sensible step toward improving the heath of its student body by requiring undergraduate students to report their vaccination history to Olin Heath Center before registering for classes.

COMMENTARY

Phone free

The time is overdue for Spartans to receive a simple lesson in the English language. Contrary to what seems to be the popular belief, the words "library" and "telephone booth" are not synonymous. MSU's undergraduate student government is right to advise MSU libraries to ban cell phone use from the university's main study areas.

Dream world

Martin Luther King Jr. did not fight so you could stay home and dream. Monday is a time to celebrate the philosophy and personality of King.

Lord of the rings

The marriage between Trustee Joel Ferguson and the MSU community is officially over. The Lansing native and MSU alumnus has lost the rings. Well, he might have given them away. Although he doesn't believe his 1990 John Hancock and 1993 Liberty bowl rings have been stolen, it seems the long-time trustee doesn't remember how he parted ways with his football trophies. In addition, Ferguson said he has no clue how his rings found their way to auction on the eBay Web site.
