Izzo paid too much during tough times

In response to the massive pay Tom Izzo receives, I must say it has a very poor and ironic timing (“In Izzo we trust” SN 11/9). I have no doubt Izzo is a great coach, but the multiple pay raises and “undisclosed gifts” he receives are crazy, not to mention his base salary.

Historic future

MSU trustees were faced with two broad proposals Friday for the future of campus’s 70-year-old West Circle dorms - renovate them or tear them down.Although a plan for the residence halls’ future is, at the earliest, months off, the buildings are becoming more costly to operate - and could cost even more to bring up to code.

Spartans manage traditional loss

The MSU football team might have lost the Old Brass Spittoon, but it managed to keep another tradition alive - losing after a big win. Every year the Spartans seem to give us glimpses of how good they can be, only to falter in a game that, at least on paper, they should dominate.

Hardest work not always class

In her dorm room, Jessica Facundo has a spiral notebook of index cards, the kind that students use when studying for history exams or conjugating verbs for a language class.

World needs caped crusaders to save roast beef, but ditch the tights

Ours is one of the few societies that idolizes large men and slinky women in tights for heroes. Folks with outlandish monikers like “Man of Steel Man” and “The Amazing Spatula” (Scraping evil from the streets!) wage battles with even more outlandish folks who might introduce themselves as “The Sinister Dr. Steve” or the nefarious “Crabula.” Comic books have often been a source of heroic displays for children - and even adults - as their favorite characters clash on newsprint, in titanic struggles that sometimes hold the fate of mankind in the balance.

In Izzo we trust

Msu officials were wise to take measures to keep one of the athletics department’s most valuable assets - men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo.Izzo’s new seven-year rollover contract is no small chunk of change.

COMMENTARY

SN should cover more race issues

I totally disagree with the letter by Mike O’Bryan in response to the Meridian Mall case receiving too much play (“Meridian Mall case gets too much play,” SN 11/7). At a time when racial profiling is at its prime, coverage of this case was not only needed, but it should have been greater.

COMMENTARY

Candid cameras

Provide all the excuses you want, having MSU police wander through tailgates armed with video cameras is not a good idea.Despite reassurances from MSU police, students caught on tape during football Saturdays - or at any other event - have to wonder if police officers are out to get them.Officials say the tapes are used to analyze the ways different groups act while tailgating, and to document arrests and large groups to protect individuals and officers from later court action. And while it can protect officers during a questionable arrest - having a visual record always helps should a disagreement surface - the ability to record at will has the potential to be abused. Most students are unaware of the reasons why MSU police videotaped at past tailgates.

COMMENTARY

Racial profiling deserves coverage

I am writing in response to the complaint made by Mike O’Bryan about the Meridian Mall case (“Meridian Mall case gets too much play,” SN 11/7). First, to answer his question was it “truly worthy of the front page of the State News?” Yes!

Womens bodies will be protected

So Ted O’Neil claims a majority of Americans disapprove of abortion (“Roe doesn’t make abortions moral,” SN 11/5). Well Ted, whether the majority of Americans disapprove is not important.

COMMENTARY

Refs OK, U-M lost game on its own

I would like to dispel the ridiculous idea that MSU benefited from bad officiating. After one of the University of Michigan penalties in the fourth quarter, the personal foul on Charles Rogers, I believe the referees mistakenly did not stop the clock as is required after a penalty is called.

Students needed abortion exhibit

The visit of “The Genocide Awareness Project” has spurred opinions in The State News lately, and as the president of MSU Students For Life, I would like to respond. First, one student wrote in a letter that she didn’t see “one pamphlet supporting counseling centers” (“Presentation does not solve problem,” SN 10/29). There were three, in addition to signs posted for crisis pregnancies and post-abortive counseling.

Equal protection

Tuesday’s election was a moral victory for gay rights supporters in Michigan, as ballots were cast in three cities in favor of anti-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation.Huntington Woods residents voted to approve a human rights ordinance passed by the city commission earlier this year that outlaws sexual orientation-based discrimination. In Kalamazoo and Traverse City, voters rejected a measure that would have amended the city charter to prohibit any ordinances to grant gays, lesbians or bisexuals “protected” status. While the voting ended in favor of the gay community, there is still more work that can be done.In April, Rep.

Balancing act

In the latest effort to resolve a $500 million state deficit, an executive order by Gov. John Engler could leave 590 Michigan residents without a job.On Tuesday, legislators approved the order, which includes cutting about $320 million from the state budget and transferring $180 million from state accounts toward fixing the deficit.Notably absent from Engler’s order, a delay in the single business and income tax cuts.

Wolverines just bad losers, sing for U

First of all, congratulations to the MSU football team for its awesome win over the Wolverines. Speaking of them, it’s too bad they are such poor losers who feel the need to verbally attack two innocent Spartan fans. While walking back from the game, three Michigan fans eavesdropped on a conversation I was having with a friend and proceeded to degrade our intelligence.

First birth makes med student grateful

I will turn 24 on Monday, and, as with any birthday, this one is being preceded by an assessment of the years already past. Accuracy and self-respect demand that I admit I have done nothing of any real worth since the day I was born.
