Dumping junk

Anyone with an e-mail address knows the annoyance of receiving unsolicited advertisements every day, and any effort to lessen the frustration of junk e-mail is welcome. Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm is initiating a fight against the intrusive marketing.

COMMENTARY

Students unaware of bills benefits

Jan. 22’s article (“Byrum discusses election reform with student Dems,” SN 1/22) quoted a student referring to last year’s elections where “students were disenfranchised,” and urging “changes and reforms so that what happened to me wouldn’t happen to anyone else.” The rest of the article detailed state Sen.

COMMENTARY

StateWalk under new management

Despite opinion claims, the Residence Halls Association could not take that claimed step back by “scrapping StateWalk” at its last meeting (“A step backward,” SN 1/24). As key interpreters of the RHA constitution, only the policy committee can initiate a removal of StateWalk, so reading that StateWalk was on the chopping block was quite the surprise to me.

COMMENTARY

Smoke free

In life there are those who smoke and those who don’t. Members of each group should feel comfortable residing in their designated areas. The Housing Options Committee approved measures last semester to give students living on campus the choice to live in smoke-free environments. Next fall, all rooms in South Hubbard and East Shaw halls with be designated smoke-free environments.

War on terrorism is filled with cover-ups

As it becomes increasingly likely that Iraq will be the next target in the “War on Terror,” I would like to point out that there is absolutely no reason to suspect it of any wrongdoing. The current stereotypes of Iraq are almost entirely based on media propaganda and have no substance behind them.

COMMENTARY

Role change

Although it may be hard to grasp the concept of hockey head coach Ron Mason not being ice-side forever, it’s a fact of life the Spartan family will have to learn to swallow. Mason, 62, will likely step down from his coaching position in June to become MSU’s 16th athletics director.

COMMENTARY

Ignorance shown at MLK Day celebration

In regard to the person who appeared on stage at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day program (“Emcee’s response was inappropriate,” SN 1/24), it is the view of many that white privilege was invoked at that time, and that little respect was given to King, the audience, the participants and to organizers of the program.

COMMENTARY

Bright future

It’s good to know MSU will reap in a few benefits in light of economic heartaches. University officials announced Thursday that MSU’s National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory will receive a 50 percent funding increase for the next five years.

COMMENTARY

Abortion challenges American liberties

The verdict of Roe v. Wade gave the right to define the beginning of human life to the individual. Leaders and citizens of the United States through history have worked to uphold the inalienable rights of every individual, particularly the vulnerable and the undervalued.

COMMENTARY

Big goodbye

It seems Gov. John Engler is confused. In his final State of the State address Wednesday evening, the Republican leader said, “Our state is strong.

COMMENTARY

Capitalistic values leave no room for campaign finance reform

As I was sitting at my computer contemplating what to write about, my first inclination was to put together an objective piece about campaign finance reform. With Congress returning to session this week, there is a discharge petition pending in the House to force a vote on the Shays-Meehan campaign finance measure.

COMMENTARY

Dont fault U for tuition increases

In past issues of The State News, many students have blasted MSU for its inability to maintain the Tuition Guarantee. It is no fault of the university for trying to avoid herding us like cattle into large 700-person lecture halls where students get no personal attention.

COMMENTARY

United voices

Members of MSU’s undergraduate student government are right to throw their hats in the ring to lobby for adequate levels of state funding. ASMSU’s Academic Assembly approved a resolution Tuesday to lobby for increased state appropriations and against a proposed tuition increase cap.

COMMENTARY

ELPD fully capable of protecting city

The recent article and editorial in The State News, regarding the drop in drunken driving arrests since 1990, paints an inaccurate picture of the capacity of the East Lansing Police Department to deliver basic police services.
