The probable opening of a new casino in Port Huron is yet another hint that Michigan is well on its way to becoming the next Nevada. After Gov.

MSU is steadily making gains and working toward a prosperous future for its students, but there is more work to be done.
Were going to set the world on fire. Our government is not edging toward the brink of war with Iraq - its running at full tilt, saber drawn.
It looks as though the possibility of the United States launching an attack on Iraq is inevitable as Congress prepares to authorize President Bush to use all means that he determines to be appropriate, including force, in order to defend the national security interests of the United States against the possible threat of Iraq. Capitol Hill is giving in to this war-mongering president and threating world security.
There is something amiss at the Biomedical and Physical Science Building, and its going to take a lot of sleuthing and tighter security to prevent what could become a major problem for campus health and safety. For the second time this month, MSU police are investigating missing property from the new building. Eight 4-liter bottles of acetic acid were stolen from a locked stock room in the buildings chemistry department between July 1 and Sept.
It was in 1996 that a small, blue-covered book published by Simon and Schuster hit the bookshelves of Barnes & Noble, Brentanos, Doubleday and every bookstore in between.
Bravo to Del Highfield for saying what all MSU students, alumni and fans have been thinking for quite some time in his letter to the editor Williams has turned team into NCAA joke (SN 9/23). One need only look at our opponent on Saturday to see what a real coach can do to improve a team.
The Page One story Drug charges on rise in E.L. (SN 9/13) represents a rare occurrence - some honesty about efficacy of our nations war on drugs. Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said drugs are just as easy to obtain now as they were 30 years ago.
In response to the editorial Exclusive U (SN 9/17), I, for one, am glad that MSU is taking steps to become a more exclusive institution. The notion it remain a place accessible to every student in Michigan should become a thing of the past.
I found the editorial about Canada legalizing cannabis to be poorly researched (Drug talk 9/18). Smuggling cannabis across the border into the United States would be inevitable.
The legalization of marijuana in Canada would only send our society here in the United States into a further downward spiral.
It is estimated 12 to 15 percent of the nations nursing positions are unfilled. That statistic is the signal of a national nursing shortage that could grow into a serious depletion if steps to remedy it are not taken by state leaders. Hospitals and clinics across the country are facing a nursing shortage that could pose a major danger to the future of health care.
Shawn Wozniak College provides a good time to reflect and meditate on where youve been and what youve done - those things youre proud of, but, more importantly, those times youre not so proud of.
I was happy to see the old cartoon Student Ghetto by Adam Miller has been returned to us in the form of Bachelor Party. As a former MSU student, I always enjoyed that particular comic strip and have missed it during the last few years. I think it is wonderful The State News continues to support local cartoonists as alumni syndicates, even though at times these comic strips may be a little more controversial than the typical Peanuts or Overboard. Again, thank you for returning one of my favorite cartoonists to The State News and supporting our alumni. Sarah J.
This is in response to Rishi Kundis column American evils forgotten as country remembers Sept.
Lawmakers are mulling over a bill they say will protect athletes from unscrupulous agents, but it seems the measure pays more lip service to Michigan voters than it does good for professional-bound athletes.
A trend, which began before Sept. 11, 2001, continues to threaten you - yes, you. Id been aware those who occupy our most respected elected offices were leading the trend, but I hadnt realized so many of my fellow citizens were following.
I have been a loyal Spartan since 1970. In all those years I have never written a disparaging word about MSU. But the last two weeks of MSU football have caused me so much distress I am compelled to protest the systemic incompetence of the athletics department. MSU is the laughing stock of NCAA Division I football programs.
Eric McKinneys column endorsing booing in Spartan Stadium (Players will whine, but booing understandable SN 9/19) is completely out of line.
To quote a famous poet, Ja Rule, Im livin it up. As a freshman, I thought I would be overwhelmed by the whole college scene.
