Students should set date to boycott city

After being lied to and run out of town by the city of East Lansing, my roommates and I are ecstatic to read the words “boycott E.L.” in The State News (“Money is power, ‘U’ should boycott E.L.” SN 9/27) It is not our intention to cause harm to any local business owners, but apparently city officials need a reminder of who supports its economy. Therefore, we propose that on one particular day, MSU students boycott all East Lansing businesses, from gas stations to retail stores to gyms.

LCC made right move with smoking ban

Kudos to Lansing Community College for banning smoking on its campus. It’s wonderful to know educational institutions are joining in the fight to marginalize and demonize the only people who actually suffer from the horrible tobacco companies that everyone loves to talk about.

Thank you

Sunday was a sad day for Tigers fans - not because the ball club posted its worst season record since 1996, but because a chapter closed in the team’s history. Sunday’s 1-0 loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto capped the Tigers’ 2002 season and the broadcast career for the only voice anyone of our generation has equated with the Motor City ball club - that of Ernie Harwell. Harwell didn’t say goodbye to the generations of fans who have tuned in to the voice of Tiger baseball for the last 42 years.

Students treat city badly, show respect

I disagree with the notion that we could be rioting at the strike of a match as established in the story “City official: Noise might lead to riots” (SN 9/26). But I am rather concerned with the irresponsibility and carelessness demonstrated by students gathering socially off campus.

Johnsons historic career properly recognized with Hall-of-Fame induction by friendly rival

It was pure magic from the beginning of a momentous career that has left millions spellbound. On Friday, Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s talent culminated in an induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The honor of the Lansing native and Spartan alumnus is well deserved, as Johnson’s basketball feats have left an impressive legacy that will not soon be forgotten. The 13-year NBA veteran won five championship titles with the Los Angeles Lakers during the three-time league MVP’s career.

Money is power, U should boycott E.L.

Ordinarily, the most popular sport during the fall is football. But for some members of the East Lansing City Council, the favorite sport is, as the State News editorial “Blame game” (SN 9/26) points out, blaming MSU students for practically everything except the arrival of winter. Lost in the furor, however, is the power MSU students have - if they wish to exercise it.

Offense not problem, coach bad for team

In response to the article “Spartan offense not up to last season’s standards” (SN 9/26), the problem is not the talent MSU has recruited, but a poor coach and coaching staff. After many years as season-ticket-holders, my daughter and I, who travel north from southern Indiana and Nashville, Tenn., respectively, to attend Spartan home games, chose not to renew our tickets this year. Last season showed us enough of Bobby William’s lack of coaching ability. His lack of discipline begins to remind us of the last years under George Perles - we all know what a disaster that was. Why doesn’t MSU demand the same from its football team as it expects from both the basketball and hockey teams.? Kate Hubbell MSU alumna

Rebuilding efforts

Pi Kappa Phi has something to prove as it mounts efforts to rebuild its MSU chapter after evicting its members for violating anti-hazing and anti-discrimination policies. Fraternity leaders were met with skepticism Wednesday as it pitched its plan to reopen the MSU chapter to the Residence Halls Association. National Pi Kappa Phi leaders evicted their MSU members in May after some went into Mason and Abbot halls cafeterias wearing pink sleeveless T-shirts with phrases such as “Capt.

Crying riot not way to solve noise issue

I was reading the article “City official: Noise might lead to riots,” (SN 9/26) and again, I am completely in amazement by some of the things people say. Councilmember Bill Sharp said a riot could happen in a heartbeat - all it would take is someone to start something on fire.

Blame game

Some East Lansing City Council members are pointing fingers in the wrong direction. Instead of reaching out to the thousands of MSU students who live in the city, some officials seem to want to blame them for the city’s problems. At its Tuesday meeting, the council placed MSU students in the center of a debate concerning an increase in noise complaints, which have risen at least 32 percent over last year.

Constitutional option

The U.S. House, led by Republicans and backed by the Bush administration, passed a bill Tuesday that would allow hospitals and health care providers the right to deny the abortions to be performed in their facilities.
