Slater gave his all to MSU hockey during his 4 years

On an MSU hockey road trip to Miami (Ohio) in early January, a RedHawks fan overheard that I wanted to speak with senior captain Jim Slater following one of the games. The fan turned to me and said, "You requested Slater for postgame?" I nodded my head.

Faculty must take steps to better accommodate inquiring students

Before I decided to attend MSU, several recruiters said to me, "this university is equipped with faculty that will go the extra mile for students and that welcome you into their offices with open arms." As each day passes and I continue to pursue my educational career at this intuition, I realize those statements are becoming more of a myth than fact. Here's my gripe. I'm interested in participating in a study abroad program to Australia.

Winter's big 3 sports to fuel excitement in tourney plays

To steal a marketing line from the Detroit Pistons: It's time. It's time for MSU's three biggest winter sports - men's basketball, women's basketball and hockey - to put behind all that has not gone right for the teams in the past and make an impact in its respective postseason tournaments. This will prove to be as big of a week as they come for MSU athletics, as two of the three teams have a long and detailed history of not being able to win when it matters most. When you look at the list of accomplishments for two of the senior classes, it's not pretty. The men's team has an Elite Eight appearance under its belt in the 2002-03 season, but other than that, team accomplishments have been few and far between, with losses in the first round of the NCAA Tournament sandwiched in between. For the hockey team, since Rick Comley took over the reins, the team has won nothing but this year's Great Lakes Invitational with two riveting victories over New Hampshire and Michigan. The biggest successes of the three teams goes to the women's basketball team, which has been steadily climbing to the top since this year's senior class was freshmen. MSU made it to the WNIT semifinals in its first year, lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and lost to then-No.

Americans must take interest in the world, not just the United States

I was listening to the radio a couple weeks back, and there was a clip of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan talking about how grateful he was for the support from the United States and other countries in the aid to tsunami victims. But he didn't stop there. He went on to say that he hopes the tragedy opened people's eyes to situations across the world and that, in the future, it won't take a natural disaster like a tsunami to move people to give their time and money to those who are being victimized around the world. The movie "Hotel Rwanda" tells the story of a hotel manager whose hotel was transformed into a refugee camp for Rwandans during an intense time of rebellion and genocide in 1994.

Win over Badgers will mean a lot more

The Izzone student section's ritual when the opposing team's players are being introduced before a game is to hold up newspapers and yell, "Who cares?" But before Thursday's game against Wisconsin, the chant was somewhat subdued. Everyone in the building cared about this game.

Conservatives, liberals both have their fair share of shortcomings

A note on the political climate in the United States: None of us have it right. Don't assume from this sentence that I think I do, but it serves well to reflect time and again. Since the election last November, liberals have complained and conservatives have rejoiced. Liberals think the world is going to hell and that America is largely responsible.
