Strengthening U.S. education

As one of the richest and most technologically advanced societies in the history of societies, the U.S. should offer the most advanced education system in the world. We in the U.S. certainly have the resources to make that happen, and we need to raise smart, high-achieving children to replace us. So far, this hasn’t happened.

COMMENTARY

From out of state and proud of it

Being an out-of-stater has a lot of drawbacks. I have to pay more money for tuition and have people question the authenticity of my driver’s license. There also is another lovely facet I am forced to deal with: stereotypes.

COMMENTARY

Globalization creates problems

Globalization is a plague that threatens to unite the world in a similar fashion to that of Adolf Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte and more recently, Islamic extremists.

COMMENTARY

Experienced politician needed

Experience counts in football pressure cookers, any coach can tell you that. After weeks of deadline-induced all-nighter sessions in Lansing, it is apparent that experience counts in politics as well.

COMMENTARY

U.S. must lose arrogance

The U.S. today is mired in a seemingly endless war that has inflicted significant damage to both sides of the battle. Iraqis wake up to the sounds of shells exploding in the distance, and American lives are being lost on a daily basis. Here in the states, President Bush has faced an endless barrage of criticism.

COMMENTARY

Child health care bill should pass

President Bush vetoed a child health care bill last week that would expand federal health care by billions of dollars to poor children because, in his words, the government should focus on helping poor children. It seems he may be confused about the bill — many Democrats feel he is.

COMMENTARY

Use resources to help Myanmar

A picture is worth a thousand words. Actually, a picture has capabilities extending past that description — as I put on my flip-flops before class this week, I found myself haunted by one image in particular.

COMMENTARY

Capitalism versus socialism

The recent decade has been an era of almost unrestricted capitalism, with the added bonus of a government sometimes working directly with corporations to cheat citizens. So it is natural to see people disgusted with the current economic situation and gazing at Europe and its attractive government-sponsored programs.

COMMENTARY

Fifteen months is too far away

If you’ve read some of my previous columns in this paper, you may have guessed that I am not the biggest fan of George W. Bush. I could list the reasons for this, but you are likely quite familiar with them, as two-thirds of the country already recognizes that he’s doing an awful job. Of course, the frightening part of that is that somewhere around 30 percent of the country thinks he is doing a good job, but that’s another story.

Don't put your pets on allMSU

This may come as a shock to most, but owning a pet is a big responsibility. Making the decision to take care of an animal is something that cannot be taken lightly. That animal will depend on its caretaker, you, for food, shelter, affection and exercise — which are the basics of taking care of a living being.

COMMENTARY

Eliminate unions to save Michigan

Last week, more than 70,000 General Motors Corp. employees across the country walked off the job in the first national automotive strike in 37 years. They were protesting the inability of GM to forge a contract agreement with the United Auto Workers union.

COMMENTARY

Right to offend people like me

My first column of the semester, Jesus is not returning (SN 9/4), generated a torrent of responses. The point of my column was that we all ought to concern ourselves deeply with critical long-term issues rather than delude ourselves with apocalyptic nonsense.

COMMENTARY

Understanding discrimination

If you happen to be white and perhaps a male, have you ever looked with chagrin at articles in the paper where a trial is starting and it focuses on discrimination? Have you shaken your head and said, “What’s the deal here?

COMMENTARY

Pleading for actual news

The other day I turned on the TV to find it on CNN. Before I turned the channel to check on the score of the latest Tigers meltdown, I saw something that disgusted me just as much as the Tigers game.

COMMENTARY

Solving budget crisis not easy

The editorial Increasing taxes will not solve budget crisis (SN 9/17) suggests an overly simplistic analysis and response to Michigan’s current financial catastrophe. Any self-respecting college student would like to see the state make up for revenue shortfalls by allowing bars to stay open later. This cannot be taken as a serious suggestion.

COMMENTARY

It's time for more mutual respect

Democracy is one of the most progressive, modern government systems. In a world of monarchies and oppressive theocracies, the democratic system gave equal voice to everybody, regardless of social class, gender or race. Granted, it took quite a while for many people to legally gain that equality in the U.S., but nonetheless, our country was designed to give the power to the people.

COMMENTARY

Gun legislation illogical, flawed

We’ve all heard the stories from our grandparents about how tough school was in the good ol’ days, whether it was Sister Mary Ellen smacking kids with a ruler or Father Paul forcing someone to wear the dunce cap. If you think those stories were unbelievable, fast forward to 2007 where, if Michigan House Republicans have their way, chalk in the hands of teachers may soon be replaced with handguns of their choice.

COMMENTARY

Undocumented people a problem

Our country is experiencing a major problem and the elected officials that are supposed to be representing us are sitting by while our country is being invaded. The problem of illegal immigration encompasses more than the simple fact that 10 million to 20 million people are here unlawfully; it has tremendous effects on our economy, our security and our culture.

COMMENTARY

Be careful of annoying quirks

Out of the past comes a term that you may not have used or simply avoided because it was just plain old. That term is “pet peeve.” They are the actions, behaviors, vocabularies or a myriad number of other things that drive you crazy.

COMMENTARY

Be responsible on foot or bike

Getting around MSU’s massive campus can sometimes be a task in itself. It only makes it worse when you find yourself avoiding speeding vehicles, not only on the streets but on the sidewalks.
