Writers should be paid for work

“Grey’s Anatomy.” “The Office.” “Heroes.” These are just a few of our favorite TV shows that may be in reruns within the next few months. Scribes from the Writers Guild of America, or WGA, traded in their pencils and pens for picket signs and megaphones last week, striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP, for the first time since 1988.

MSU needs to fix stadium system

If inflatable spears were real weapons, there would’ve been a bloody mess last Saturday at Spartan Stadium. And Michigan fans wouldn’t have been the only targets.

Some politicians care about state

It is a month later than what the Michigan Constitution says, but we finally and officially have the state budget fixed for the next fiscal year. The whole state is split about the final solution, but no solution to the budget problem would be accepted by everyone.

Blaming disasters on deities foolish

Humans have long attributed acts of nature to unseen entities. Ancient pagan mythologies were particularly rich with stories of gods representing personifications of natural forces. The Norse, for example, believed that thunderstorms resulted from the activities of the god Thor, and lightning was caused by Thor’s use of Mjolnir, his mystical hammer.

Addressing the climate debate

The debate over climate change has shifted several times during its 30-year-span, but the fundamental question has, for the most part, remained the same.

Racism against Mexicans in U.S. unacceptable

I’ve gained a new perspective on Mexican culture and history. Unfortunately for Mexicans in the U.S., many people have gotten so caught up in the “war” on illegal immigration that we’ve lost a respect and reverence for this vibrant culture. Anti-Mexican sentiment is the new racism in the U.S., and it’s just as socially acceptable today as racism against blacks, the Irish and the Japanese was at various points in our country’s history.

Important to vote in election

Have you ever found yourself concerned with public safety? Do you like to check books out from your local library? Do you drive on dilapidated city roads?

Romney right for president

Michigan and its residents are facing a difficult time. Unemployment is close to an abysmal rate of 8 percent, the budget in Michigan is currently facing a 1.75 billion shortfall, and more than one million Michigan residents do not have health care insurance.

Senate bill positive for environment

In June, the U.S. Senate passed an energy legislation package requiring the first significant upgrade to the nation’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE efficiency standards for cars since 1975.

Youthful apathy runs rampant

Much has been made of the similarities between Iraq and Vietnam, both by anti-war proponents and, more recently, by the Bush administration. At the surface, they are certainly compelling. Both were a thinly veiled attempt at imperialism that ended with the superpower at the mercy of the guerilla; both resulted in bloody chaos once the superpower left.

Dalai Lama honor brings problem to light

Who would have guessed it would take a foreign religion to bring the Democratic-run Legislature and President Bush together? Not me, but it happened in one of the most positive political moves of the Bush administration yet.

Blackwater USA actions alarming

It’s fair to say that the United States, as the greatest democracy in the world, holds those forces accountable who participate in the merciless slaughter of innocent civilians.

Student group does not discriminate

If anyone read the letter by professor Frederick Fico, MSU officials violate the anti-discrimination policy (SN 10/19), I bet one could easily say, “He is a Republican, so what is new?”

Single issue votes decay democracy

If you watch the news today with any frequency, you cannot help but get a feeling of déjà vu. There are several issues which the news media delights in discussing — abortion, gun rights, Iraq, immigration and same-sex marriage are examples of a few — and a vastly disproportionate amount of time is spent on them.

'Friendly skies' not so cordial

The act of traveling the “friendly skies” is just not an activity to take lightly anymore. So what has happened to air travel across the nation? Over the past 40 years the great flightless population of the U.S. has gravitated from the large dogs of the roadways, Greyhound, to this new Greyhound for the skies — United, Delta, Northwest and all the various “no frills” or “cheap” carriers.

Eating raw for better health

For some people, the thought of eating nothing but raw foods is preposterous. To others, it’s the ticket to a healthy body and lifestyle, with very few illnesses and a general sense of complete wellness. So who’s right?

You can be a minority and a Republican too

When I attended the GOP conference on Mackinac Island in September, I saw a shirt that said “I’m a black Republican” and someone joked, “Do they even exist?” Even though there were only a handful — five or six out of 3,000 attendees — the answer is they do exist.

Please donate bone marrow

As other 16-year-olds got their driver’s licenses, extended their curfews and got ready for dances, my world quickly transformed into one of adulthood, as I found out my dad was diagnosed with cancer.

Responsibilities of leadership

With power comes responsibility. Now, this might seem obvious to some, but it can all too easily be forgotten or pushed aside when those in power stray from their original goals because they take on too many responsibilities at once or have more to gain personally by changing their views.
