Salvia poses less risk than alcohol

One drug was related to 390 Michigan deaths in 2006, and more than 16,000 since 1982. The other was related to zero nationwide, perhaps worldwide. Which one is under threat of becoming illegal, of course, has nothing to do with that.

Everyday details now spark debate

I drink fair trade coffee and drive a fuel-efficient car. I get a thrill out of recycling and I listen to bands you haven’t even heard of yet. I admit that global warming and social inequalities are things that keep me up late into the night and I’ve often considered career changes that would allow me to work for a greater good.

Rogers' Law could affect students

Are you ready to vote? Don’t worry. This isn’t part of the mountain of editorials and columns begging you to go out and register to vote — although you should be registered, and those exhortations are coming.

Disregard 'lies' on magazine covers

You’re in line at the checkout in CVS Pharmacy and notice the magazine rack stocked with this month’s latest. Marie Claire and Shape stare back at you, rife with regurgitated headlines and a carefully sculpted, pouty female prepared to disclose the trials and lamentations of fame. “Sculpted?” you think. Yeah, right. The pen tool in Photoshop can work wonders.

Alcohol use in E.L. warrants serious consideration

To walk down one of our residential avenues on a Friday night is a sobering experience. Not for any lack of alcohol imbibed — that, at least, is open and apparent — but for the insights it offers into human behavior. A casual stroll on a weekend evening will reveal spectacles that would be horrifying if their constant presence had not already desensitized us.

Learn about Mich. government now

At the beginning of the school year, I find myself reflecting on my experience as an undergraduate student at MSU from 2001 to 2005. Though I am now a graduate student at MSU, I take my classes in the Detroit area, where I work full-time, and seldom find myself in East Lansing.

Stop dreading end of the world

Last week, much of the world was on its feet worrying that the human race was going to get sucked up by black holes created by the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC. The next day, billions of people woke up relieved we were still here.

Tactful use of new technology a must

Technology has gone too far. For more than a century, that’s been the cry of the luddites of the world. Yet even as modern society rejects the call to arms, it still seems to have struck enough of a chord to become a prevailing theme in our popular culture. The Fox network alone has two primetime shows centering around the theme.

Obama helped, hurt by hip-hop

The relationship between politics and hip-hop has been an unsteady one to say the least. You can draw parallels between it and a family reunion — politics being the well-to-do success story families rave about, while hip-hop settles into a role of the talented yet troubled youth whose potential is squandered by several character flaws.

COMMENTARY

Politicians not always consistent

Misdeeds in a politician’s private life can be bothersome, but not as bothersome as when that politician is hypocritical about them. For example, I don’t believe I have a double standard when I say I’m angrier with the typical Republican when he or she has a sex scandal than when the typical Democrat does.

COMMENTARY

Informed voting is key to election

The second biggest cliché charging political pep talks (behind unqualified belches to vote) is preaching that citizens “get informed.” The only difference in the following argument is that I’m not asking. I’m telling.

COMMENTARY

VP's gender not a political platform

The Republican Party is commencing its campaign smokescreen, only this year it wears lipstick and high heels. This isn’t me stereotyping or belittling Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at all.

COMMENTARY

Election coverage leads to fatigue

I think I’m already sick of this presidential election. Turning on the TV two months before election day, I’m already finding the airwaves swamped with political ads. Newspaper headlines are dominated by what the campaigns are doing — with The State News as guilty as the rest.

COMMENTARY

Change starts here for MSU students

This November, many students will cast their votes and have a voice in who will be the next president of the United States. Besides just voting, students across campus have taken active roles in organizations and campaigns to help elect the candidate they support. Yes, the presidential election this November is very important.

COMMENTARY

Politically correct language needed

Everyone is offended by everything these days. If it’s not a slip of the tongue on the radio or a comedic routine gone dreadfully awry, it’s a coffee house name change or a radical political author fighting for free speech.

COMMENTARY

True masculinity lacking on campus

Ladies, you may kindly move on to page 5. This one’s for the guys. Men, what the hell happened to manliness? No, I’m serious. And I’m not talking about society’s idea of masculinity either — loudmouthed men who love beer, baseball, brothels and “Braveheart.”

COMMENTARY

Response to Gustav lacks sincerity

Gustav — yet another hurricane decimating the Gulf Coast — has presented our country with the opportunity to right the wrongs that made Hurricane Katrina so devastating three years ago.

COMMENTARY

Support war before enlisting

To most Americans, military enlistment is admirable service to one’s country – no questions asked. Military members are praised with such fervor that questioning this automatic gratitude and approval is met with outright hostility.
