Graduating in four years unlikely plan

I came to MSU with 30 credits before I even enrolled in a college class because of Advanced Placement class credit. I didn’t have to take prerequisite classes such as Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities and Integrative Studies in Biological Science. I tested out of Economics 201 and 202.

Balance needed amid technology

Human ingenuity is impressive, and the things that have been created are marvelous. However, technology must be made to offset technology, a principle that has been part of America since the founders.

Lansing in dire need of quality films

As the East Lansing Film Festival wraps up, I can’t help but feel saddened I’ll have to go back to scouring the Internet in hopes of finding the next limited release showing in the area.

COMMENTARY

Remain skeptical of government warnings

After a strenuous eight weeks of classes, the weeklong sabbatical known as spring break usually sends MSU students scrambling frequent flyer miles and calling up distant relatives in different area codes, desperately searching for a reprieve.

COMMENTARY

Be skeptical when consuming news

There is no such thing as “unbiased journalism.” It is a myth and a falsity. More importantly, it is an irresponsible and even potentially dangerous concept for someone to believe.

COMMENTARY

Images of Israeli conflicts skewed

After illegally occupying territory for more than 40 years, killing thousands of civilians in its frequent military offensives, ignoring constant resolutions from the United Nations, and habitually imprisoning and starving an entire population, Israel has finally admitted it has a problem. But not a policy problem — an image problem.

Making Mich smokefree a matter of health

As a state representative for the Lansing area, I have to disagree with the position The State News editorial board took in its editorial Smoking ban should be decided by restaurants (SN 2/16). The editorial board missed the main point of smoke-free legislation: Keeping workers healthy, plain and simple.

COMMENTARY

Pay cuts necessary for elected officials

Everyone across the country is telling Michigan the same thing: Sacrifices must be made. Michigan has been portrayed as Uncle Sam’s disobedient, immature, thumb-sucking nephew. The other 49 nephews and nieces are stubborn, going through the growing pains of a degenerating superpower.

COMMENTARY

Cell research debates miss out on facts

Political discourse in our country, sadly, is often no better than what one would find in middle school children, where the shortage is not in the quantity of opinions, but in concrete facts on which to base those opinions. It is far easier for politicians to resort to demagoguery and rhetoric than to actually educate themselves on the issues they face.

Cure for diabetes finally in sight

Almost two years ago, I wrote a column in The State News about a few days I spent in Washington, D.C., with 150 kids and teens with type 1 diabetes who were advocating for federal funding for a cure.

Keep inhumane circus out of Breslin Center

Institutions can seem like scary things. When we think of an institution we think of big, immovable structures that exist whether we like it or not. But despite the aura we typically get from the faceless concepts of university and policy, there are real people behind them, and we can and should have the power to influence them.

COMMENTARY

Leaders still need public oversight

It has not been a good week for our traders on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average tanked once again Friday, closing at just over 7,000 before dropping another 300 points on Monday.

Bidding farewell to the newspaper

When I wake up every morning and grab my perfectly healthy newspaper, I can’t help but think of how soon this helpless, defenseless thing will be lying on its deathbed. I can hear the persistent “beep, beep” of the heart monitors, see the slow trickle of fluid from IV bags and smell the pages of the newspaper decaying into a deathly yellow pallor.

COMMENTARY

Council displays irresponsibility

It was not long ago that I thought there couldn’t possibly be a more backward City Council member in our state than one found in Lansing’s City Hall, where Councilmember Carol Wood seems to make her living by building coalitions to oppose common sense initiatives.

COMMENTARY

Funding needed for nonprofits

The economic recession that has the nation and world reeling right now has been felt in Michigan for most of the past decade. During the past six months in particular, news stories have focused on the fate of the automobile manufacturers that we used to call The Big Three.

Look closer: good people still out there

It was cold Tuesday, with a high of 31 degrees — just below freezing. It had been warmer before, though, and you could tell. High temperatures had been teasing the 32-degree mark for several days after a week of uncharacteristically balmy February weather.

Bottled water not worth cost, harm

On a daily basis, students make a decision that is poor for their health, their wallet and the environment. In elementary school, we learned that water is the basis for all life on earth — in the U.S., that water often comes from a bottle. And Many students grab a disposable water bottle without a second thought.

Partiers should be mindful of behavior

There’s an empty pickle jar lying on the main floor of my house. A garbage bag keeps the cold from invading, covering the broken window through which the pickle jar entered my lovely war zone of a home.

COMMENTARY

Lawmakers should put citizens first

The citizens of any government follow the laws of their society for better or worse. America is a country based on the ideology that the government was formed “of the people, by the people, for the people.”
