Military policies tarnish U.S. image

When I turned on the 24-hour news stations during winter break, I expected to hear the usual rabble about violence in the Middle East and low holiday sales, but instead I was shocked to stumble across what the military somehow viewed as a good idea — jailing women who become pregnant on duty in Iraq.

Decisions impact our reputation

There is a 14th century parable about a well-respected blind philosopher whose reputation was “accidentally” tarnished by a mistake that he did not “see” coming.

Opinion writing can't be just fluff

For those of you who pick up on it, forgive me my blatant hypocrisy in this column. Maybe it’s my general life-skepticism, my hyper critical view of the world, or my pure and genuine disdain for the current state of our society as a function of the marriage of individual delinquency and group complacency, but my reading of opinion columns seems to be highlighting, in small doses, what tends to be wrong with people these days.

Take advantage of MSU in new year

As we’re now roughly past the first two weeks of 2010, New Year’s resolutions are in full force. Gyms are packed, cigarettes are being put out and money is being saved.

Naming new decade proves difficult task

New Year’s Eve always is more exciting when a somewhat significant change in numbering occurs. As we left behind yet another decade, we were instantly handed another pressing question: how to pronounce years during this decade.

College experience requires pimpin'

I very distinctly remember a hot day in September when I stood at the bus stop in front of the Communication Arts and Sciences Building and listened to a girl talk to pretty much anyone who would listen about getting involved in campus life.

Charity should not end at Christmas

We all have Christmas traditions. Some might be personal and family centered, such as whether your family opens presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, while others might be national, such as the 24-hour loop of “A Christmas Story” on TBS every Christmas Eve.

U.S. must return to self-sufficiency

In life, we come to discover that we must become self-sufficient in order to make our lives the most effective. We cannot rely on our parents for the rest of our lives — at least most of us can’t — and above all, we cannot count on anything from anyone.

Editor reflects on end of MSU career

So this is the end. Again. Well, it’s the end for me, at least. Yes, I am finally taking that fateful walk and picking up that empty container that would contain my diploma — if MSU actually gave it to you at graduation.

Columnist offers December advice

If you were like me this past weekend, you enjoyed a tremendous feast, its leftovers and spent a lot of quality time with those you care about. But Thanksgiving is just the beginning to a month of holiday splendor.

COMMENTARY

Players' actions disgrace MSU

I have a confession to make. For this week’s column, I originally penned a pretty scathing and sarcastic piece directed at the MSU administration, law enforcement officials and athletic departments for what I considered to be an obstinate denial to release any information regarding the assault that occurred Nov. 22 in Rather Hall.

Knowing self key to relationships

I am a single young woman, and I am not looking for a relationship. After recently ending a relationship, I wanted some time to myself, but the relationship drama has not stopped following me around.

COMMENTARY

Buying local can benefit community

With the economy in a rut, unemployment remaining stubbornly high and consumer spending understandably down, retailers put extra emphasis this year on driving customers to holiday sales.

Students need to slow down life

We don’t have time for this. There are BS 111 pages to read, papers to write and coffee friendship-resuscitating events to attend. If you read this while power walking to the bus, or are already on the third paragraph because your schedule only can afford skimming, then I’m like you.
