Attitude defines good instruction

Sometimes I wonder if anyone really cares about the opinions, attitudes and feelings of students on campus. I have spoken with a number of students over spring semester and the beginning of summer semester.

Izzo has done enough for MSU

There is one thing on the mind of most Spartans fans right now: What will MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo do next? The mania has swept the area. Fans have held at least two official rallies — one at Breslin Center and another at the Marshall Street Armory in Lansing.

We should live for "the right now"

When was the last time you did something for the first time? As my 20th birthday approaches, I keep finding myself thinking about “firsts.” Every year of my life, I try to accomplish as many firsts as I can. This summer, my first internship has filled up my days.

Is the Internet making us stupid?

I came across an interesting article in the June 4 Wall Street Journal by Clay Shirky entitled “Does the Internet Make You Smarter?” Although its roots lie in the journalistic tenet of raising questions ultimately too great or too ambiguous to answer, the growth of the argument had its own value in asking the world to recognize the genesis of a media culture too young to have boundaries and, even if they existed, too powerful to heed them.

Let's use better moral judgement

Gallup released a poll May 25 that suggests more than 50 percent of Americans think homosexuality is “morally right.” The statistic is the most recent in a trend that shows increasing acceptance of same-sex lifestyles. The same poll also shows 43 percent of Americans believe homosexual lifestyles are “morally wrong.”

Opinions should be constructive

find it hard to believe for an entire semester I hadn’t plopped myself down at the computer to write umpteen “opinion pieces” — published or not. The semester was so busy one of my favorite activities had to be put not just on the back burner, but on a burner that was turned off.

No excuses for not contributing

Throughout the years, opinion editors at The State News have pleaded with readers to write opinion pieces and letters to the editor. As for the letters to the editor, one is quick to see the current space is taken up by pieces written by journalists from around the country; very little comes from the readers of The State News.

Military service is about people

I’ve never really known how I feel about the Armed Forces. I know I am fascinated by it. I love the history, strategy, social and political changes that have happened in the wake of wars.

Actions help us teach good ethics

Summer is a time to relax and let the mind open up to something other than 15 credits or a mass of responsibilities. Perhaps it also is the right moment to think about what a university should be fostering in its students, faculty and staff.

Media is affecting our body image

What’s a person to do when he or she is praised and simultaneously condemned for having a certain body type? Cassie Smith, a 20-year-old waitress at Hooters of America, Inc. in the Metro Detroit area, experienced that firsthand.

Ban on smoking protects rights

The smoking ban is in full effect, y’all. As of May 1, Michigan residents no longer can smoke in public areas. The areas of importance include restaurants and bars, as well as patios where food is served. I’m not elated or pissed off about the ban, but I will say I enjoy having clothes that don’t smell of old cigarette smoke. The scent of stale alcohol and shame will do nicely, thank you.

Creating a home away from home

This summer marks the first time I will spend the months of May, June, July and August outside the warmth of Grand Rapids — the city I have called home for more than 20 years. Last summer I did manage to make it back to East Lansing to pal it up with some buddies, but for the majority of the time I bummed around the house and made sure my mother was adequately displeased with my doings.

Summer is a time for you to opine

Summer is here and it seems we can look forward to three and a half months of mild weather before unreasonably hot and humid temperatures arrive just in time for football two-a-days.

Regrets don't spoil time at MSU

It felt odd to walk out of the Communication Arts and Sciences Building on Thursday after the final class of my undergraduate career. Like most graduating seniors, I was relieved to be done, and felt a bit of sadness as well. But another emotion crept in: regret. I wondered if I really made the most of my time in that building, or in my entire time at MSU. And with graduation one week away, I’m realizing that, yes, I have a few regrets.

Many lessons to be learned at MSU

In my four years at MSU, I’ve learned a lot of things, most of which came outside the classroom. So many things, in fact, that I don’t even have time for transitions in this piece! So without further ado, everything I’ve learned since arriving in East Lansing as a naive 17-year-old:

Use smart studying methods for finals

Although they often have only minor side effects, the casual use of the drugs for studying can turn into an abusive addiction with dangerous side effects likened to those of cocaine. Yes, the drugs potentially can help you get ahead in terms of grades, but is using them and staying up all night really worth it?

Opinion page place to share many ideas

I am currently debating whether I am an insufferable individual who can’t keep his mouth shut or — after viewing the comments typically directed at opinion columnists — a glutton for punishment. I am probably both; maybe neither. Either way, I’m going to lay talk about myself, prepare anger accordingly.

New cruelty law should be stricter

Because of the recent court case of United States v. Stevens, the law in place to mostly target criminalizing “crush videos” has been overturned so as not to punish those who were unable to qualify films showing animal cruelty as legal under the law.

Learning multiple languages beneficial

Now at the end of my second year of Portuguese classes, I have learned so much more than just a language. Learning Portuguese has improved my English grammar, made me more aware of another culture, increased my interest in international travel and, among other things, it was fun.
