Keeping international students from studying in U.S. wrong solution

The Gleaner from Henderson, Ky., on its editorial page proclaimed, “Clamp down on foreign visitors... Make sure that foreign visitors leave when they are supposed to leave... Make sure that they do what they say they are going to do, such as study in our universities.” From these comments, one could quickly move to a belief that we should no longer allow any international students to enter our beloved land.

With the recent attacks on our home front, more than ever a uniform represents honor and unity. But to me, it reminds me of my father. My dad was pulled out of rural Frankford, W.Va., to serve in Vietnam.

Ours is one of the few societies that idolizes large men and slinky women in tights for heroes. Folks with outlandish monikers like “Man of Steel Man” and “The Amazing Spatula” (Scraping evil from the streets!) wage battles with even more outlandish folks who might introduce themselves as “The Sinister Dr. Steve” or the nefarious “Crabula.” Comic books have often been a source of heroic displays for children - and even adults - as their favorite characters clash on newsprint, in titanic struggles that sometimes hold the fate of mankind in the balance.

I will turn 24 on Monday, and, as with any birthday, this one is being preceded by an assessment of the years already past. Accuracy and self-respect demand that I admit I have done nothing of any real worth since the day I was born.
