Affirmative action opponents pose one-sided, racist argument

Maybe five times I have said something positive about the University of Michigan. Like with many rivalries, sporting events elicited this bias, which was eventually directed against the university’s students, its academic quality, and even the school as a whole. Soon the 6th Circuit Court will issue a ruling on affirmative action at U-M, a ruling with broad implications on the admissions policies of all public universities. The ruling may break from the Supreme Court’s precedent in University of California v.

Six rules for shopping like a manlier man

We’re in that long stretch of gray and featureless time between winter and spring breaks in which the days of class and work seem to smear together into one long slouch festooned in banners of dirty slush. It’s a time during which I can’t go home to stock up on food.

Politicians have much to learn from McCains campaign examples

When Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., campaigned to become our nation’s chief executive in 2000, he communicated a message of patriotism, hope and an unabashedly fervent belief in the American dream. Hard-core Republican reactionaries feared McCain because he was not conservative enough for their liking.

Understanding Enron is easy when you compare energy to apples

The Enron Corp. scandal is dominating print and broadcast news, and every day, developments in the matter are announced with ever more shocked voices, in ever more ominous tones. But the Enron scandal, like most ongoing news, is a little bit like “Rex Morgan, M.D.” or “Judge Parker” or any of the serious comics nobody reads.

Music puppets should avoid the movies and subsequent failure

After spending years singing and dancing, or at least lip-synching and dancing, there seems to be one thing that no pop star can resist: movies. They flock to them in the hopes of leaving their oh-so-hard lives of learning dance moves and rehearsing the songs that people have worked so diligently on to get the kids moving and buying records. And then, the movies really, really stink. I can already picture dozens of teeny-boppers running to the nearest computer to write up some letter telling me I’m an idiot and that I should just stop criticizing pop stars, or that I’m just jealous. But the issue here is not the music.

When it comes to faith, big picture more important than minor details

Now that Super Bowl XXXVI has come and gone, the sports world can turn its attention to the Winter Olympic Games. With that, the world spotlight pivots to focus on Salt Lake City - the Mormon Mecca of the United States. I make that reference because it seems I have yet to see an Olympic preview about the host city in which its dominant religious influence isn’t mentioned. Through this second point, I have found the inspiration to write this column.

Choices, decisions are part of what makes living life interesting

Sometimes the clock drives me crazy. It just doesn’t stop. We are so controlled by time that I find myself wasting too much precious time or trying to kill time while I’m waiting to do something more exciting. But what bothers me more than the endless ticking of my watch is wondering if I’m making the wrong choices.

Columnist discovers comedy on campus

I have been told that in this existentialist age in which we live, nothing is funny anymore. I cannot help but be saddened by such a bleak outlook on the state of humor in modern times.
