Before coming to the United States to study at MSU almost three years ago, I had never even heard of affirmative action, let alone possessed an opinion on the matter. That sort of scenario doesnt last long with people who are as opinionated as I am. Affirmative action was present, and still is, everywhere - in the media, lecture halls and casual conversation in the cafeteria.
Years ago, while attending middle school, I noticed a trend - a trend that has continued, for the most part, up until now, about a decade later. All my friends, the ones with whom I played video games, sports or just plain committed small-time juvenile crimes with, were changing.
Life is fragile. Tragedy strikes every second of every day and nothing can stop it from happening. Ive lost people I love when I shouldnt have.
Can you hear the silence? Can you feel the silence? Before the year 2002 came crashing in, I would have said that those kinds of questions are ethereal and should be relegated to the discussion of poetic nuances.
Saturday nights heavyweight bout confirmed my belief that Mike Tyson has forever fallen off the plateau of boxing superiority. The man called Iron Mike, who used to intimidate opponents first with his psychological warfare - he was quoted as saying he would eat Lennox Lewis unborn children - then knock them out with brute strength, was beaten by Lewis, clearly the more skilled and tactical fighter. I suspected that Lewis height and reach advantage would be too much for Tyson to overcome.
Act I I fell in love with drama at a young age. Growing up in the flourishing community of Canton, I was exposed to all sorts of traveling and high-school entertainment troupes. Acting owned Canton, with yuppies, including myself, packing the theaters every night. I soon realized I was tired of being a spectator.
When author David Horowitz visited campus during the spring semester, progressive groups decried him as a racist who would poison the well of free thought across campus. To satisfy my curiosity, I attended the Horowitz lecture.
A Democrat may tell you that Republicans and the their party dont care about or do anything for higher education. Like many Democratic claims, the facts speak otherwise. Under Republican leadership, higher education funding has grown to its highest level ever in Michigan.
The other day, I was running late for work. I was literally running full-bore down Grand River Avenue to a crosswalk to get me across the street to the building where the lair of The State News is located.
I was not raised in a world darkened by the shadow of Armageddon but in one illuminated by its certainty.
The nation of East Timor territory has just recently been changed into the Democratic Republic of East Timor - a signifiable name for the worlds newest country must hold a great deal of meaning to the Timorese people who have lived, and fought, in one of the worst civil wars a nation has ever faced.
I am faculty. I am one step beneath God. You will do what I say whether Im wrong or right.
If this weeks column seems more a memoir than usual, forgive me; I promise it gains relevance toward the end. I was raised about 20 miles north of here, in St.
I was born and raised a Catholic. Baptized, first Holy Communion, confirmed - you name it, my mother supported it.
I know, I know. The Pi Kappa Phi incidents of April have been debated and analyzed a million times over with opinion letters, articles, editorials and the like.
The ratings of Survivor are down, I dont know anyone who watched Temptation Island 2, and Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire? was an embarrassing flop.
When the leader of a country is murdered, the ethos of that nation can be forever changed. The names Kennedy and King will be emblazoned in American political and social discourse as long as our Constitution continues to live and breathe. John F.
This is a column about golf. Ill do my best to avoid the obligatory ball jokes that most trained humor professionals might make when writing a golf column, but I cant guarantee anything. As the days (supposedly) get warmer, hundreds of citizens head out to the links to take part in the exclusive gentlemans game known as golf. Recently, I joined some of my co-workers in a rousing round of the sport as part of an outing sponsored by the Michigan Press Association.
For me, like a lot of people I know, the opinion section of a newspaper is always a highlight. Its where, ideally, everyone has a chance to speak their minds as a part of that wonderful First Amendment we all hold so dear. It also allows the newspaper to take a stand on issues, a real treat since we journalists spend most of our time attempting to report the news in an unbiased manner. But for this particular section to work, there needs to be more than just one guy ranting.
