P. Diddy, O-Town create shallow reality TV

Flipping the channels one Saturday afternoon, my roommate and I saw an advertisement on MTV for its second installment of “Making the Band” - “Making the Band 2.” As I watched the commercial and waited for the announcement of another boy band/girl band-type group, I learned, much to my surprise, that a hip-hop group will be formed with the aid of P.

Countrys leaders making a dangerous world, reforms needed

Last week, I found myself looking through a pile of old political cartoons and came upon one with a tombstone that read “50 Million War Dead, 1900-1999” as its shadow lay over a map of Europe. It made me wonder: After Congress gave President Bush the OK to use unilateral force against Iraq, could there be -in 100 years, or even in 50 years - a political cartoon with the same tombstone and the same number, but a different shadow spread over Africa or the Middle East? Or, worse yet, a shadow hanging over North America?

As semester flies by, students need to prioritize to-do lists

Time is a precious commodity, and it seems like there is never enough of it. I am positive that next to money, time is the item practically everyone wishes for the most. Everywhere we look, we are reminded of time passing by much too quickly. It’s already the middle of October.

Abortion debaters looking at wrong problem, need to dig deeper

Pay attention all of you who champion pro-life and pro-choice efforts because I think you are all blind to the real problems that plague our society. You can march and drive around with catchy signs and bumper stickers all you want, but none of you are helping remedy the ills we face together. Ever since coming to The State News, I have told myself I would never write a column with the word “abortion” in it.

U should take advantage of day for free depression tests

Sometimes, one day can make all the difference in someone’s life. Fortunately, I learned this before it was too late. And it’s not too late to discover ways to help yourself or a loved one. Thursday is National Depression Screening Day. Held each year during Mental Illness Awareness Week, the day is designed to promote awareness of depressive disorders such manic-depression and anxiety.

Students, residents should share blame for E.L. troubles

Students. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. It seems tensions are mounting between students and East Lansing residents since the commencement of classes, but a recent city council meeting showed the real, lingering problem. Everyone seems to be pointing fingers instead of sharing the blame. This city was founded and fostered by the growth of MSU since the 1850s, which has created a “where would you be without me attitude” among students. The fact is, there probably is about the same number of permanent residents living in East Lansing as there is students.

Nirvana scandal a disgrace, Love should get a life

I’ll say it now: Courtney Love is completely out of her mind. Ever since I started following Love’s vendetta against the surviving members of Nirvana after the death of her husband and the band’s former frontman Kurt Cobain, I’ve lost nearly all respect for the once talented lead singer of now-defunct Hole. The ruckus Love raised while trying to stop the release of one of Nirvana’s last recorded songs, “You Know You’re Right,” caused a standoff that spiraled out of control, creating one of the worst publicity stunts I’ve ever seen. Following Cobain’s death in 1994, things were bad for Love. I’ve got sympathy for her there - losing her husband to suicide, leaving her to care for their daughter Frances, certainly couldn’t have been easy.
