Beginning of new season brings back great memories

My Old-English "D," dark-blue baseball cap drooped over my eyes and forehead - mainly because I was only knee-high to a grasshopper - as I walked from the parking lot toward the monstrosity that was Tiger Stadium. My parents gave the ushers my ticket and I waddled up the sterile, gray ramps past the yummy smells coming from the pizza stands.

Showing live combat on TV only can have negative impact

And I thought reality TV couldn't go any further. People are being married by the audience, kicked off islands, rushing fraternities and sororities and now this. Live war. Late Saturday night, CNN and many other news networks around the world aired a battle near Umm Qasr in Iraq, live for our viewing pleasure. Sure, I'll admit I was frozen to the TV watching the events unfold, which is the goal of any TV network. And sure, it was a great show of journalism, especially after the tragic events that some journalists have already encountered in the war. But come on, you can't just go broadcasting live battle scenes.

Recognizing same-sex marriages would solve 'U' problems

Amidst the fighting in Iraq, prayers for our brave troops and the protesting in the streets, another less publicized controversy emerged last week when graduate student Carolyn O'Laughlin resigned as the Mason Hall assistant hall director after fighting against a policy that prohibits same-sex domestic partners from living together in university housing.

First impression of Bush was apparently off target

As it turns out, I was wrong in my original assessment of President Bush. Initially, I thought him to be a spoiled rich kid with surprisingly limited intellectual capacity and a penchant for malapropisms, whose achievements in life can be traced predominantly to lucky parentage.

Proposals such as Eco's have no chance under policy

Reducing our dependence on foreign oil is a process that will require sacrifices. It means we will need to concentrate on other available sources of domestic energy. This is part of the reasoning used by the MSU environmental student group Eco in its proposal to implement a $5 tax on undergraduate students to be used for the purchase of cleanly produced wind, solar and biomass energies for the university. Maybe you agree with this proposal and maybe you don't.

Impending war sends friend overseas to serve the U.S.

Somewhere in the middle of Missouri, Pvt. Andrew P. Johnson (Andy to me) spends his days learning how to prevent and respond to biological attacks. My 18-year-old friend from high school is training to be a chemical soldier - the first line of defense in the event of chemical warfare. He graduates from his training in May and was supposed to come home for a while before heading off to his first duty station. But all of that has changed now. My cell phone rang Sunday afternoon with an unfamiliar number on the screen and a strange voice on the other end. "Who is this?" I asked. "Andy." "ANDY!" I shouted. A co-worker agreed to fill in while I stepped away from my desk to talk to the voice I hadn't heard since Jan.

Irish celebrate holiday with patriotism

Dublin, Ireland -Patriotism was all around me Monday as people sported the three colors of the country they love most - orange, white and green. I must admit I was ecstatic to learn that the dates of my Ireland study abroad program coincided with the celebration of the famous Irish holiday, St.

Want peace? Learn to respect people despite differences

I began to think of the many things that one could offer opinions on this week. I thought of trying to focus on the war with Iraq, the economy that is affecting MSU or the upsurge in vicious rhetoric that has seen racist comments on doors, ministers calling Mohammed a monster and innocent people being killed because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Good, evil aren't just identified by different-colored hats

I've come to the conclusion that life would be a lot easier if things were in fact just like Hollywood fantasies portrayed them to be. We certainly would never need to devote much thought or energy into deciphering who is good and evil in the world - the good guys would all wear white cowboy hats and the bad guys would sport black ones.
