East Lansing City Council headed discussions around racial equity and the COVID-19 response at their Aug. 11 meeting, including an extension of the mayor’s order requiring masks be worn in all outdoor, public spaces in the downtown district.
With the appointment of two new Black council members Saturday, Aug. 1, East Lansing City Council made history by creating the first council with people of color in the majority. The existing council members unanimously appointed Dana Watson and Ron Bacon to the two vacant seats.
The new requirement does not apply to individuals who are younger than five years old; those who cannot medically tolerate a mask; those who are eating or drinking while seated at a table/food service establishment; those who are exercising, when wearing a face covering would interfere in the activity; or those who are at a polling location for purposes of voting in an election, according to the release.
