While the COVID-19 pandemic has taken an economic toll on many Americans, college students in particular have found it difficult to maintain employment and a steady income to pay for their tuition, rent and other expenses.
Colleges for the newly elected representatives include the College of Arts and Letters, College of Communication Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, Lyman Briggs College, College of Social Science and College of Veterinary Medicine. The representatives' first committee meeting will be on Thursday, Oct. 15.
"At this point we have still not made a determination on our spring semester, but certainly we'll make sure that that is well communicated to our students, faculty and staff once the decision has been reached," MSU Deputy Spokesperson Dan Olsen said.
“The mantra that I have, when it comes to COVID-19: everyone's infected, including you,” Stanley said. “And that’s how I look at what I do. I just assume that everybody I come in contact with potentially has COVID-19, and I assume I potentially have COVID-19. So it’s my responsibility to not infect them, and I’m expecting them to take responsibility to not infect me.”

Isolation housing is only for MSU students living on campus or in an on-campus apartment with suitemates or roommates. It is not mandatory for a student who tests positive for COVID-19 to quarantine in Kellogg.

President Abii-Tah Bih provided an update that recommendations for the spring semester from the Academic Calendar Task Force were made to President Samuel L. Stanley. The recommendations were made based on a survey open to the MSU community. The committee is still meeting, and these suggestions are not final decisions, just recommendations. The initial suggestions are as follows.
“This is entirely personal for me and for many of the people on the leadership team, so we don’t take any of these decisions lightly,” Senior Vice President for Auxiliary Enterprises Vennie Gore said. “We don’t believe that our staff are expendable. But in the end, if I’m not collecting enough money I can’t pay you.”
MSU College of Human Medicine’s Department of Translational Neuroscience Chair Jack Lipton said it appears they have been able to catch positive COVID-19 cases in the very early phases using the MSU early detection program. Currently, 75% of samples are focused on the spread of COVID-19 among asymptomatic students.
Mosallam's first eight-year term with the Board of Trustees began Jan. 1, 2012. He is the only incumbent seeking reelection.
