Undercover rules added to student guide

A memo from President M. Peter McPherson released to The State News on Monday said new undercover surveillance guidelines will be placed in the Spartan Life: Student Handbook and Resource Guide starting next year.Spartan Life, which is distributed to all on-campus students, establishes rules and laws for MSU students.The addition is the result of more than a year and a half spent on revising the rules for undercover operations by MSU administrators and student leaders.

Students camp out for Izzone membership

Armed with sleeping bags, tents and pillows, about 350 MSU students gave up hours of their weekend in an effort to become members of the Izzone.The Student Alumni Foundation sponsored a campout for tickets in the largest student-operated spirit section in college basketball - the 953-member Izzone.“We got here at 6 a.m.,” English senior Andrea Sprague said.

The auditorium of Anthony Hall was packed with about 1,500 students and their parents, all eager to participate in MSU’s Science, Engineering and Technology Day on Saturday.A open-house format directed high school and no-preference MSU students through billboards and guided tours of the 10 MSU colleges participating in the event.

Alix Olson, slam poet, feminist activist and folk artist, will treat audiences to her singular style of energetic, politically charged poetry at the Common Grounds Coffeehouse in Akers Hall today. “I think she’s incredible,” Angela Jones, a member of a music collective called “Longhairz,” said.

LBGT alliance kicks off Coming Out Days

National Coming Out Days are being celebrated on campus. In past years, the Alliance of Lesbian-Bi-Gay-Transgendered and Straight Ally Students has passed out educational material during the week, but group president Natalie Furrow said it often ends up tossed on the ground. “Students aren’t very receptive,” Furrow said.

Three students vying for the position of external vice president discussed their views and qualifications to the Residence Halls Association General Assembly Wednesday night.After three hours of scrutiny by the general assembly, international relations sophomore Derek Wallbank was given the position by a majority vote.

Group shares culture, honors Filipino month

Catherine Guevarra’s feet jumped quickly in rhythm with the wooden sticks.Moving her body to tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines, the pre-dental sophomore took part in the Philippine American Student Society’s kickoff for Filipino History Month on Wednesday at the rock on Farm Lane.“We just want people to know we’re here,” Guevarra said, who is a member of the society.

Recruitment for MSU’s Panhellenic Council begins today. The process consists of three components - phase A, phase B and preference. “Phase A is really a getting to know you phase,” said Elana Pure, Panhellenic Council vice president of external recruitment.

Campus Center attendance rises

Weekends for some students consist of kegs and house parties, but more students this fall are putting away their six-packs in favor of tubs of popcorn and attending Campus Center movies at Wells Hall. Graduate student Erica Benson said she is a regular because there are no theaters close to campus. “I watch at least one movie a weekend, sometimes two,” she said.

Grant helps digitize state history

MSU Assistant history Professor Roger Rosentreter learned Monday about a grant that will help to place resources on Michigan’s history online, and he’s already supportive of the idea.“A lot of information is in small library districts and the people outside that area don’t know about it,” said Rosentreter, who teaches a class about Michigan history and would consider informing his students about such a Web site.

U police conduct crime scene class

Lifting fingerprints off pieces of evidence and checking out MSU police’s crime scene investigation van are some of the hands-on policing experiences students learned about Tuesday night.For the first time, the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety is offering an 11-week Citizen’s Police Academy that is conducted through MSU’s Virtual University and meets Tuesdays until the end of November.
