ASMSU: Officials can increase voter turnout next year

After ASMSU's efforts to increase voter turnout, the number of undergraduates who voted this year were the same as last year. About 5 percent voted in the election, after student government officials attempted to raise voter interest by hosting a pre-election pizza party, handing out free T-shirts and running several ads in The State News. Undergraduates had the opportunity to vote online on several issues in last week's election, including the renewal of ASMSU's tax, additional seats being added to the assemblies and a tax increase to fund a scholarship that students voted against. Of 26 seats available on the Academic Assembly, nine students were elected to represent colleges.

Departments to go to paperless system

In May, the University Stores and Mail Processing departments will switch to a paperless format when issuing statements and reports. Billing statements from departmental charges made by mostly faculty and staff will be affected. April statements will be the last received on paper, and May's statements will be available electronically in June. AIS Document Viewer, already used on campus, will allow members of the MSU community to view their statements and reports.

Prof earns position, will teach in Holland

Patrick O'Donnell plans to head to Holland this fall, a country famous for wooden shoes and alternative French-fry toppings, as a Fulbright Distinguished Chairs winner. O'Donnell, a professor of English and chairman of the department, is one of 36 winners who will spend September through December teaching in another country.

RHA looking to fill 2005-06 positions

The Residence Halls Association is beginning to fill its top positions for next year. At last week's meeting, David Sahlin was elected over two other candidates as the group's vice president for next year. Sahlin, a telecommunication, information studies and media junior, said he wants to collaborate with each dorm to find ways for groups to harness their potential. "One of the biggest issues was that a lot of people didn't really believe that hall governments are empowered enough to do everything that they can," Sahlin said.

ASMSU officials need time to finalize results of student election

ASMSU officials have candidate results for last week's undergraduate election, but Student Assembly Chairperson Andrew Schepers said finalizing the results "takes time." ASMSU's election committee, along with the university's election committee, has to review the student government's election totals to make sure there are no "screw-ups" and to make sure the counts are accurate, he said. ASMSU's election committee also will have to validate write-in candidates and confirm that the write-ins have been placed in the correct college as a candidate. Undergraduates voted on candidates for 58 open seats and a proposed tax hike of $3 in the election, which took place Wednesday and Thursday.

A group of MSU law students sang their way to a national championship earlier this month. The team of four gave a rendition of "Hello Again," a tune they picked up from Nick at Nite commercials, before beginning each round of the Irving R.

MSU administrators were on hand in both Austin, Texas, and Kansas City, Mo., for the men's and women's basketball games Sunday, and said they were pleased with both the teams' and the fans' performances. MSU President Lou Anna K.

Author and professor Michael Klare will discuss resource management and overconsumption in the United States and abroad tonight in South Kedzie Hall. Peace and Justice Studies, an undergraduate specialization program, is sponsoring Klare's speech, which begins at 7:15 p.m.

Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students to hold annual 'Satrang'

With sweat on their brows, members of the Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students concentrated while dancing to traditional Indian rhythms this weekend. The group was practicing for its upcoming "Satrang" event on April 8. "Satrang" is the coalition's annual cultural show dedicated to bringing a taste of Indian tradition to campus.

Students could redevelop Traverse City

Students in MSU's Landscape Architecture program might soon get the chance to redesign the downtown area of a northern Michigan city. Traverse City, a community of about 15,000 people, is in the process of requesting help from the students as part of the Small Town Design Initiative, a program run by Warren Rauhe, an associate professor of landscape architecture and director of the initiative. In the project, the students would work with Traverse City residents to redesign a 2-mile stretch of land that runs alongside the Grand Traverse Bay, as well as attempt to better connect it with the downtown area, Rauhe said. "There's a lot of open space, a lot of green space there, a lot of opportunity to do something really special," he said.

1 million log in to LON-CAPA

A program formed in 1999 with courses mainly in the areas of math and science now has a course selection that spans campus and just reached another milestone - the millionth student login. The online course management program, LearningOnline Network Computer-Assisted Personalized Approach, or LON-CAPA, celebrated the 100,000th student to login last fall.

RHA wins multiple awards at statewide conference

The trophy case of the MSU Residence Halls Association just got a bit more crowded. At last weekend's annual conference of the Michigan Organization of Residence Hall Associations, or MORHA, MSU's RHA came away with multiple individual and group awards. MSU RHA President Ernest Drake was named president of the year.

Undergrads still waiting for election ballot count

Student government elections came to a close at 7 p.m. Thursday and ASMSU leaders did not have election totals available. John Sturk, who acts as a liaison for the student government and Academic Computing & Network Services, said proper personnel were not available to release voter turnout information. Election results are anticipated to be released before the weekend's end. And although the government is trying to fill empty seats, some candidates might now be disqualified. Officials said ASMSU's Elections Code "is not in its best form" and Tuesday it caused friction for the second consecutive year. In March 2003, about 28 undergraduates were disqualified when MSU College Republicans and MSU College Democrats endorsed running candidates on each group's respective listserv.

Group carries cross for Easter

With an about 7-foot wooden cross to bear, students from University Christian Outreach traveled along the Red Cedar River in celebration of the spirit of Easter. Today is Good Friday, which marks the beginning of the Easter holiday, the holiest time of the year for Christians.

Undergraduate students from a number of universities across Michigan presented their research Wednesday at the Capitol for the Michigan Undergraduate Research Forum. More than 50 students from MSU, Wayne State University, University of Michigan, University of Michigan-Dearborn and University of Michigan-Flint were present at the forum. The event commenced in the Capitol rotunda with an opening speech by MSU President Lou Anna K.
