Professor and World Champion Ron Southwick keeps the legacy of taekwondo at MSU alive

MSU professor and United States taekwondo nation team gold medal champion Ron Southwick runs the taekwondo club in IM West every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Southwick has been leading the taekwondo club for over 25 years without compensation because of his passion for the sport and teaching. He took a taekwondo class as a student at MSU, and when he heard his former professor was retiring, he volunteered to take his place to save the program. Now, Southwick teaches students at all different levels, from white belts to other world champions.

MSU sanctions five fraternities; reasons unclear

Two of the affected fraternities — Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon — were featured in a State News story published the day before the sanctions went into effect detailing police reports of hazing and sexual abuse at those fraternities and others.

The MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center handles tens of millions of pounds of recyclables and used objects every year. Every day, employees sort through cereal boxes, compost and metals to identify recyclables that can be transformed into new products.

Most of the security upgrades MSU has embarked on since the shooting — including adding more locks to classroom doors, installing a centralized security center and refining the university’s emergency notification system — are now complete, but their implementation hasn’t always gone smoothly.
