MSU baseball looks to correct recent pitching woes against Rutgers in Big Ten home season opener

Michigan State baseball has had a rough start to the season, including two losses at Maryland and a loss to Oakland at home, a game in which the Spartans allowed 16 hits and went through seven pitchers. However, the Spartans look to spin things around and possibly take a series win against Rutgers in Michigan State's home series opener against a Big Ten team. The Rutgers are 18-7 and have not played at Big Ten team yet, as opposed to Michigan State's 10-13 record overall and a 1-2 record in Big Ten play.

‘Fearless’ MSU baseball team gears up for 2024 season

As a new season begins, high expectations continue for the team and a search for new hope begins as well. In 2023, the Spartans finished 33-22 and 12-12 in the Big Ten, as they placed seventh in the Big Ten, right behind the University of Michigan. MSU’s win total last season was the highest since winning 36 games in 2016.

MSU baseball’s offense not enough to overcome the Maryland defense in first round of Big Ten Tournament

Despite a fantastic outing from the eighth-seeded Spartan starting pitcher Nick Powers, who had six strikeouts in seven innings, the effort was not enough to overcome the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins. Their defense turned countless double plays to strand 10 Spartan runners in a 3-2 first-round loss. With the loss, MSU will face the winner of fourth-seeded Nebraska and fifth-seeded Rutgers on Thursday morning to attempt to prolong their season. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.

Preview: MSU baseball to face No. 1 seed Maryland in first round of the Big Ten Tournament

While the .500 record to finish the last month of conference play off was not exactly ideal, the seven wins in that span were just enough to allow MSU to grab the eighth and final seed in the Big Ten Tournament, marking a return to the conference's post-season tournament for the first time since 2018. With coming into the tournament as an eight seed, Michigan State will face the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins. The game will be the third of the tournament's opening day with first pitch clocked for 7 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Nebraska. While the winner will advance to play either fourth-seeded Nebraska or fifth-seeded Rutgers on Thursday evening, the losing team will still have something to play for as they will face the loser of that same game on Thursday morning.
