Spartans pound Lakers with offensive explosion

Not even a 7-foot fireballer could cool down the Spartan bats Wednesday night at Kobs Field.When southpaw Nathan Barden took the mound against the MSU baseball team (20-6 overall, 4-3 Big Ten) he couldn’t have imagined the Spartans would outscore his Grand Valley team 20-2.But Barden lasted just three innings for the Lakers (14-7, 6-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), surrendering six runs and eight hits.Six different Spartans hit home runs as the team launched a season-high seven over the fence.

Sluggers ready for Northwestern

As the MSU baseball team returns to Big Ten action, it expects better results.After splitting its first conferences series with Minnesota 2-2, the Spartans (17-5 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) are looking for a better performance at Northwestern.The Wildcats (7-13, 1-3) host the first of a four-game series 3 p.m.

Spartans split Big Ten opening series

After dropping its Big Ten opener, the MSU baseball team used the long ball to split a four-game series with Minnesota at Kobs Field this weekend.The Spartans (17-5 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) hit nine home runs in Saturday’s tripleheader to win two games.

Baseball team deserves more

This has not been the ideal March for MSU sports fans. After three consecutive Final Fours, you thought the men’s basketball team could pull it together and make another run at a title, but they bowed out in the first round. Then, the Spartan hockey team followed suit with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Colorado College in the NCAA Tournament ending the career of legendary coach Ron Mason. Then the women’s basketball team created some excitement on campus, advancing deep into the 2002 Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Spartans blank Saints in home opener

The Spartans’ home opener treated fans to the baseball team’s first shutout of the season.MSU (15-3) defeated Siena Heights (4-19) 6-0 at Kobs Field on Wednesday afternoon.“Our team is definitely really confident, there’s no question about that,” Spartan manager Ted Mahan said.

With a keen eye and a swift bat, Bob Malek has made a name for himself on the baseball field.The junior right fielder raised eyebrows last season when he set MSU’s single-season hits record at 88 and boasted a .427 average at the plate.For the two-time All-American, winning is what matters most.“I just want to win,” Malek said.
