Smith's adjustments key MSU's turnaround

Coaching adjustments haven't exactly been a staple of the John L. Smith era. Teams have been able to find an MSU weakness and exploit it for the length of the game as the Spartans look on in disbelief.

Sara Brown leads U.S. to World Games title

MSU junior women's golfer Sara Brown shot a five-over-par 293 to take fifth place individually and lead the United States to a team championship at last weekend's World University Games in Torino, Italy. Brown, a first-team All-Big Ten selection last season, had the second lowest score for the American squad, which beat second-place Japan by two strokes. Brown was the fifth Spartan ever to compete in the event and the first since Sarah Martin in 2004.

Spartans finally get home cooking today

A road-weary MSU field hockey team will make its home debut at 3 p.m. today, when it faces Yale at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. MSU, 6-1 at home last season, is looking to rebound from a brutal season-opening six-game road trip. "It's really nice to be home after three long weekends on the road and little to no time to recover," MSU head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. After a 2-4 start to the season, van de Kerkhof said MSU has something to prove to its home fans. "For Michigan State, it's an opportunity for them to show their friends and their fans at home that they are on the right track and that the season is still young," he said.

Spartans blank Titans, 1-0

Although gray skies and rain covered Old College Field on Tuesday afternoon, the MSU women's soccer team came out smiling after a 1-0 victory against Detroit. But it wasn't all smooth sailing.

FOOTBALL

That's more like it

During a four-minute span of Saturday's game, MSU played complacently and its defense gave up big plays, allowing Eastern Michigan to score 17 points. But for the other 56 minutes, the offense dominated and the defense stifled the Eagles en route to a 52-20 win at Spartan Stadium. "It was a little bit of a roller-coaster ride," head coach John L.

Monday Musings

Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn bounced back from a poor showing in his first game to throw for 287 yards and three touchdowns in a blowout of Penn State on Saturday. In a surprise to much of the national media, though, Quinn did not cure cancer or save the rain forest. Game 5 of the WNBA Finals was scheduled to be played at the Palace of Auburn Hills, but because a Mariah Carey concert was already booked there, it had to be moved to Joe Louis Arena.

WEB EXTRA: MSU women's soccer team ignites offense in win

With the crowd screaming "Go Green! Go White!" and the MSU softball team yelling from behind the opposing net in a surprise appearance, the MSU women's soccer team notched a 2-0 shutout victory against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday at Old College Field. The Spartans quickly forced the ball upfield off the game's opening kick and kept it there until freshman forward Lauren Hill scored the first goal of the game less than 10 minutes in, knocking the ball into the net off a cross from junior midfielder Maureen Pawlak. "I saw it floating over the top of my head," Hill said.

Offense struggling in post-McMahen era

Despite starting the season with a 3-1 record, "frustrating" is a word that comes up frequently when talking about the MSU men's soccer team's offense. The Spartans have scored just four goals in the season's first four games and haven't been able to put teams away when they've had the chance. That was the case in Sunday's heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime loss to Northern Illinois.

Transfer has champion pedigree

When junior midfielder Kevin Reiman transferred to MSU from Maryland after last season, he expected to fit right in with the Spartans' starting unit. After all, he has a national championship under his belt, having played 10 games with Maryland, last year's NCAA men's soccer champions. But after tearing muscles in his abdomen this preseason, Reiman hasn't seen the field yet. "I got cleared to play yesterday, so I'm kinda getting back into things," Reiman said Wednesday.
