Icers snap 8-game winless streak, split series with BGSU

Bowling Green, Ohio — After breaking an eight-game winless streak Friday with a 3-0 win over Bowling Green, the MSU hockey team was outhustled and outplayed Saturday night as the Falcons salvaged a split with a 4-2 win at BGSU Ice Arena. MSU (6-7-4 overall, 3-5-3 CCHA) was without the services of junior captain Drew Miller (shoulder) and senior defenseman Jared Nightingale (sick), forcing MSU head coach Rick Comley into some lineup changes.

Comley looks for success over former team

It's been a long three seasons for Rick Comley since he left Marquette for East Lansing. The MSU head coach is just 3-7 against his former team, Northern Michigan, since becoming the Spartans head coach in 2002. MSU was swept out of the Berry Events Center last season in the only two meetings between the schools and the Wildcats eliminated the Spartans from the CCHA Super-Six in 2003 and 2004. Now, off to its best start under Comley, MSU is looking to end the Wildcats' dominance when they meet for two games on Friday and Saturday, both at 7:05 p.m.

It has been a season of ups-and-downs for the MSU hockey team and it has only played five games. The ups have been aplenty, with the team starting the season 3-1-1 and getting wins against top teams North Dakota and Cornell. "Our confidence is very good because we are getting such great efforts from all players," MSU assistant coach Tom Newton said.

With a big game against No. 1 Michigan coming up this Saturday, the MSU hockey team wasn't found on the ice Thursday night. Instead, head coach Rick Comley canceled practice and took the team bowling. Comley's doing whatever he can to take the pressure off the Spartans (2-0-0 overall) before they travel to Yost Ice Arena to face the Wolverines on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. Last year, the Spartans played two games against U-M at Yost, losing one and tying the other. The MSU hockey team's early success continued this weekend as it defeated Western Ontario 4-2 in a dogfight exhibition game Friday night at Munn Ice Arena. Even though the Spartans (2-0-0 overall) outshot Western Ontario (0-0-0 overall), 40-13, the Mustangs still proved to be a challenge.

MSU hockey head coach Rick Comley couldn't ask for a better start to the season. Last weekend, the Spartans went on the road and won the Lefty McFadden Invitational tournament in Dayton, Ohio with commanding victories against Wayne State and North Dakota, last year's national runner-up. It's the first time the Spartans have won their first two games since the 2001-02 season. "I always like to start two and zero," Comley said. The Spartans (2-0-0 overall) will hit the ice again at 7 p.m.
