Granholm authorizes job-growth department

Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed an executive order Wednesday to promote job creation and economic growth in Michigan by combining state departments. The order would create the Department of Labor and Economic Growth by renaming the Department of Consumer and Industry Services and merging the functions of pre-existing departments. "The department will allow state government to be more nimble and aggressive in creating jobs, enabling us to spend taxpayer dollars more efficiently, and will create a one-stop shop for business creation and development," Granholm said in a written statement. The changes shouldn't directly impact MSU students as they enter the work force, said Kelley Bishop, executive director of MSU's Career Services and Placement. "This doesn't raise any red flags immediately," Bishop said.

Book, film to be at 'Hoosiers' viewing

The Lansing City Councilwill vote next week on the reinstatement of an ordinance allowing police to seize vehicles of prostitute solicitors. After a three-year trial period, council members are evaluating the effectiveness of the ordinance to decide whether to renew it. Web mentor program upgraded

Improvements to an online mentoring program for women in engineering and sciences will make finding a mentor easier for MSU students.MentorNet, a national one-on-one mentoring program that started in 1998, has been upgraded this year to allow students to select their mentors from a pool of professionals.Tom Wolff, associate dean for undergraduate studies in the MSU College of Engineering, said the upgrades improve the program, which he said has gradually improved since it was introduced at MSU in 2001.

Stossel talks to 'U' on freedom
