In case you missed it … Weather in Michigan this January has ranged from snow, to 50-degree-days, to rain. Temperatures have been an average of 20 degrees higher than normal, according to the National Weather Service. Last February, 11 inches fell on East Lansing and MSU had its first snow day since 1994.
Out of the four seasons, winter seems to bring the most pain to my wallet. With the combination of after-New Year’s sales, the high price of outerwear and the sheer fact that there is nothing else to do in the cold, the resulting credit card bills are enough to give anyone an aneurysm.
Michigan residents have witnessed an unusually warm winter season, but besides being unexpected, the high temperatures have had a positive impact for many in the East Lansing community.
Matching its longest win streak since the 2008-2009 season, the No. 19 MSU men’s basketball team eked out a 90-81 win against Lehigh for its eleventh straight.

Indianapolis, Ind. — Streamers and confetti rained down on the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd of 64,152 as the No. 15 Wisconsin football team celebrated its second consecutive Rose Bowl-birth. And as quarterback Russell Wilson grabbed ahold of the Big Ten title, Spartan Nation left, heads hanging and asking, “What if?”

Leading up to Saturday’s matchup with Northwestern, MSU head coach Mark Dantonio preached about finishing the job and not allowing the Legends Division trophy to “lose its shine” by being sent to Ann Arbor to share with their in-state rivals.
Walking gingerly downhill on a narrow, winding street in Cadiz, Spain, paved in incredibly smooth and shiny stones bigger around than softballs, one of my companions, D.G. Schiltz, commented, “There are no championship rollerskaters from Cadiz.”
Employees of the Clinical Center are not allowed to park on the adjacent parking lot, which is assigned exclusively to patients, but instead use the parking lot on the other side of Service Road. They face all kinds of situations making that painful crossing: rain, snow, wind, ice, etc. We, as employees of the Clinical Center and neighboring facilities, are happy to make these daily, multiple trips to provide the adjacent and safe parking lot for our patients. But there is another side of the story.
