Remember the days when bullies lifted kids up by the front of their shirts against a locker demanding lunch money? How about the days when standing up to a bully was between the student and the bully, settling the score face-to-face during recess?

As I sat gazing out my window at the fairly miniscule number of pedestrians walking by my office, the almost nonexistent vehicles hurtling by on the road, and the seemingly total lack of any negative thoughts in my head, I realized for the millionth time that it is a whole lot easier to be critical toward things in which we can find fault.

I’ve always been of the mind that education is about understanding. A student takes the materials provided and seeks to understand their application and meaning. One strives to understand the “why” and “how” not only to grasp the subject matter, but also see how it fits with the world in general.

What do you think of when you hear the word “valedictorian”? I assume most of us know the title typically means “a student who has earned their spot as having the highest grade point average, GPA, in his or her graduating class.” Lately it has been a growing trend among high schools in the U.S. to sprinkle a few more students in there. And by “a few,” I mean anywhere ranging from three to 94 students.

There is nothing like almost being killed by someone who isn’t paying attention while he or she is driving. In the majority of those cases, I have been (un)lucky enough to see the driver focusing on some cell phone-related activity that has nothing to do with actually driving. It seems that problem could be remedied on Thursday when it becomes illegal to text while driving. Hooray?

An MSU professor has released a new State of the State Survey that shows Michigan residents are showing signs of increased optimism with the state’s economy, while at the same time losing faith in their political leaders.

The state House overwhelmingly passed legislation last Wednesday that would make it illegal to sell or possess JWH-108, a key substance in the product K2. I am laboring under the assumption that state legislators are attempting to ban this substance because they are afraid it could harm the general populace. I feel the comments of state Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, reflect how legislators felt when presented with this new substance.

Ah, marriage. A beautiful commitment of love, a consummation of desire and the cultural recognition of two people’s coupling — how has it become so disdainful, so wrought with seclusion and denial?

A student recently ran into me breathless, asking if I had spent my weekend watching, cheering and going crazy over soccer. The way he talked, I imagined it was like the second coming of Christ, Buddha, Mohammed or King Benjamin.

Due to its unemployment rates, Lansing finally qualified as an EB-5 Regional Center. Essentially, it is the worst way to have a chance to attract investors.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone really cares about the opinions, attitudes and feelings of students on campus. I have spoken with a number of students over spring semester and the beginning of summer semester.

There is one thing on the mind of most Spartans fans right now: What will MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo do next? The mania has swept the area. Fans have held at least two official rallies — one at Breslin Center and another at the Marshall Street Armory in Lansing.

When was the last time you did something for the first time? As my 20th birthday approaches, I keep finding myself thinking about “firsts.” Every year of my life, I try to accomplish as many firsts as I can. This summer, my first internship has filled up my days.

I came across an interesting article in the June 4 Wall Street Journal by Clay Shirky entitled “Does the Internet Make You Smarter?” Although its roots lie in the journalistic tenet of raising questions ultimately too great or too ambiguous to answer, the growth of the argument had its own value in asking the world to recognize the genesis of a media culture too young to have boundaries and, even if they existed, too powerful to heed them.

Gallup released a poll May 25 that suggests more than 50 percent of Americans think homosexuality is “morally right.” The statistic is the most recent in a trend that shows increasing acceptance of same-sex lifestyles. The same poll also shows 43 percent of Americans believe homosexual lifestyles are “morally wrong.”

find it hard to believe for an entire semester I hadn’t plopped myself down at the computer to write umpteen “opinion pieces” — published or not.

Throughout the years, opinion editors at The State News have pleaded with readers to write opinion pieces and letters to the editor. As for the letters to the editor, one is quick to see the current space is taken up by pieces written by journalists from around the country; very little comes from the readers of The State News.

Former MSU athletes tend to pop up in unflattering news stories all too often. Whether it’s Charles Rogers and Plaxico Burress, two former members of the MSU football team who have become more infamous than famous because of their off-field behavior, or more recently, Zach Randolph being linked to a drug bust in Indianapolis, none of the bad press reflects well upon the university.

I’ve never really known how I feel about the Armed Forces. I know I am fascinated by it. I love the history, strategy, social and political changes that have happened in the wake of wars.

Summer is a time to relax and let the mind open up to something other than 15 credits or a mass of responsibilities. Perhaps it also is the right moment to think about what a university should be fostering in its students, faculty and staff.
