Last season was filled with ups and downs for Michigan State men’s ice hockey, as they began a transition period following the arrival of head coach Danton Cole. The Spartans finished last in the Big Ten for the second season in a row.

Hockey season is approaching ever closer as the annual Michigan State hockey media day took place Tuesday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans still have a little over two weeks before they play their first game of the 2018-19 regular season.

MSU hockey players preview the team’s games against No. 8 Michigan on Friday and Saturday. The Wolverines visit Munn Ice Arena for a 7:30 p.m. Friday matchup, before hosting MSU at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Junior forward Brett Perlini talked about the team’s offensive outburst after it generated nine goals during two games of the Great Lakes Invitational, while junior forward Trevor Nill said the team has remained close despite several scoring droughts during the first half of the season.
The Spartans are 7-10-3 on the season and have 16 regular season games remaining.

Former Spartan and current Manitoba Moose forward Mason Appleton was named as the Dudley (Red) Garrett Award winner as the AHL's outstanding rookie. He's the first player in the program's history to receive the award.

Freshman forward Mitchell Lewandowski named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and named to the Big Ten Hockey All-Freshman team. Sophomore forward Taro Hirose received Second Team All-Big Ten and senior defenseman Carson Gatt received an honorable mention All-Big Ten.
