Campus Archaeology Program (CAP) excavates old observatory site

Members of the Campus Archaeology Program work on excavating the old observatory site in East Lansing, Mich. on June 15, 2026. The CAP program works closely with MSU's Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF) team to ensure that each construction project on campus is properly mitigated and that historical artifacts are preserved. The old observatory site was originally found in 2023 when IPF attempted to install hammock poles in the area and hit concrete, whereafter CAP confirmed that it was the foundation of the original 1880 observatory and planned a field school for 2024.
