Black Lake Sturgeon: Scenes from Michigan’s Shortest Fishing Season

Hundreds of anglers set up shanties and drilled into the thick ice of Black Lake near Cheboygan, Mich., on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, hoping to spear one of the few sturgeon the DNR allows to be harvested each year. The season began at 8:00 a.m., and lasted only until 9:05 a.m. after the sixth and final fish was caught.
