Connor Cook named MSU's starting quarterback against South Florida
Connor Cook has been named the starting quarterback for the MSU football team against South Florida, per MSU.
The sophomore gets the nod over senior Andrew Maxwell, who was the team’s starter a week ago against Western Michigan. Head coach Mark Dantonio was mum on the decision during the week, citing the desire to open the competition in practice and protect his players in the process.
“Everybody’s out there and has a helmet on in practice, and everybody gets evaluated every day,” Dantonio said on Tuesday. “That’s all I can tell you.”
Cook was Maxwell’s backup against the Broncos, going 6-for-16 passing for 42 yards along with 35 yards rushing on four carries. Maxwell was 11-of-21 passing for 74 yards and struggled to find a rhythm for much of the game after opening on a 5-of-5 tear.
A season ago, Cook appeared in just three games and throwing one touchdown and one interception on 9-of-17 passing.
Redshirt freshman Tyler O’Connor also is expected to see playing time against the Bulls on Saturday.
