A line continues to grow as classes end and students begin to funnel into the MSU Main Library for the beginning of their late night studies in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday, Oct, 16. 2026.

At the Starbucks in the MSU Main Library, students with a meal plan can use one of their Combo-X-Changes to purchase either one venti drink, one grande drink and a pastry item, or a tall drink and any food item.

With lines that frequently span all the way to the west staircase, the MSU Main Library’s Starbucks is a hub for students. Waits are sometimes close to 40 minutes, leaving bystanders to question why students choose this location as opposed to the handful of other coffee shops on and around campus.

Construction management sophomore Evan Johnson said he thinks the longest he’s ever waited in the Starbuck’s line is 30 minutes. He finds it annoying, but sometimes it will be his first meal of the day, so he stays.

“It’s just the closest to where I live,” Johnson said, but it becomes too much for him when the line reaches the stairwell; “I have to avoid it at that point.”

Biomedical laboratory sophomore Emily Kroth said she has rarely gone to the library Starbucks.

“I just go every once in a while,” Kroth said, “but I would definitely say I try to not come at very busy times with people.”

Kroth thinks a lot of people are addicted to caffeine. While she empathizes with this, she could never stand in the longest of the Starbucks lines. Though 1855 Place also has a Starbucks, Kroth thinks the fact that the library's location in central campus plays an important role.

“Most people want to study at the library, just because of all the resources they have,” Kroth said. “I like to check out stuff. So if I need a charger or something, it’s very convenient.”

Criminal justice freshman Audrey Nelson also said that the MSU Main Library's Starbucks is the closest to her dorm and thus is the most convenient. Nelson said she has waited in line up to 40 minutes, but that's not her cut off. The fact that Starbucks is included in her meal plan is Nelson’s driving force to stay in line.

“I feel like I’m missing out if I don’t go and get it,” she said.

While in line for so long, Nelson likes to stay busy by studying for her classes or just scrolling on her phone, but she too gets frustrated with long waits.

“I feel like it just takes a really long time and that there should be more Starbucks in the area, because it’s such a busy place for everyone to go to,” Nelson said.

Psychology sophomore Livia Nesti said the most annoying thing about the Starbucks line isn’t even the wait to order, it's the even longer wait for your items afterwards.

“I feel like they’re just so back logged,” Nesti said.

Nesti said her drive to wait in line depends on how badly she wants her items, but if she’s trying to go between classes, it’s not worth it. Because of this, she prefers Strange Matter and the 1855 Starbucks.

“1855 is a little bit faster,” Nesti said. “I feel like when I’m in line, maybe you’re waiting like 10 to 20 minutes, where Starbucks at the library is so much longer.”

Students can also exchange their combos at Strange Matter in the Union and Starbucks in 1855 Place. Off campus options include cafes on Grand River Avenue such as Foxtail, Haraz Coffee House, Moka & Co., Foster and more.
