Michigan State University Athletics announced half-off concessions for students during the second half of Saturday's Homecoming football game in an effort to keep students through the fourth quarter.
The exclusive deal applies to students seated in sections 11, 12 and 13. The offer is valid from the start of halftime through the end of the game. Students must show their student ticket wristband to claim the deal. It is only valid at designated stands on select items. Alcohol and student meal deals are excluded.
MSU has made it a priority to improve student engagement at athletic events. MSU Athletic Director Dan Bartholomae said he's aware of fans’ concerns surrounding MSU’s struggling football program and wants to bring about new traditions at Spartan Stadium.
"Traditions lead to affinity, which leads to people wanting to stay for the whole game," Bartholomae told The State News.
In an effort to rally fans during Homecoming, MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo will join the student section after halftime.
Bartholomae said he wants to bring concerts back to Spartan Stadium. He didn't reveal specific plans for future shows but noted there would be both pre-game concerts and one-off concerts throughout the year.
"I don't know that we're giving (students) enough reasons to stay into the fourth quarter," Bartholomae said. "I think we need to activate their experience a little bit more."
Michigan State football hosts Illinois at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Spartan Stadium. The game will air on FS1.
