As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, bright sparkly summer fashion slowly moves to the back of your closet and is replaced by the familiar warmth of your autumn staple pieces. The arrival of the fall months not only ushers in pretty scenery, but also new trends and traditional aesthetics that will dominate for weeks to come.
One of the most exciting aspects of the autumn season is the leaves changing into a multitude of different colors and shades. Given this, the trending colors seen across the fashion world tend to reflect more earthy tones.
Chocolate browns, burgundy, forest green, mustard yellow and plum are all typically associated with the cooler months. These darker shades bring a level of dimension to fall outfits that reflect the seasons tones.
This year cobalt blue, olive green and baby pink are making a breakthrough in the traditional earthy shades. They are primarily being used as a pop of color in either nail designs or accessories, leading them to becoming the season's trendiest colors.
Fall is a season that is known for creating a cozy and comforting atmosphere, and much of its fashion reflects this. As always, chunky warm sweaters are a huge hit this season because of their versatility. This year, they are being paired with mini skirts as well as light and dark wash jeans.
A good pair of knee-high boots is becoming a huge staple, too. They are easily paired with a mini skirt, a chunky white sweater and a matching jean jacket, providing a classy look for the daytime.
The oversized style of sweaters are becoming less prominent, making room for different silhouettes. More form-fitting knits, off-the-shoulder designs, wrap tops and even poncho styles are becoming increasingly popular. These alternatives offer the wearer a balance between comfort and elegance, ultimately elevating looks.
With much of this fall inspired by 90s fashion, lace trim on slip tops and maxi skirts are all the rage. Both of these styles utilize many different necklines and cuts, which gives a level of sophistication to an otherwise plain item. They also provide a great way to transition a day outfit into a night look.
When it comes to layering, fall is the season for it. This year, there is a huge focus on finding the perfect oversize jacket to complete your outfit. The most popular ones are jean jackets, leather coats and barn jackets. This is a simple way to upgrade your wardrobe as it’s incredibly versatile and a great way to ward off the chilly air.
A style of jacket that has gained traction recently is cropped suede with a fur trim. This stems from the fur coat craze last winter and it’s a lighter alternative. Slowly, as we exit fall, fur will come back into the trend cycle in full force.
Alongside the season's rich colors and cozy textures, patterns and prints are leaving their mark on this year's fall fashion. In recent years, animal print has been at the forefront of each season, and this autumn is no exception.
Doe print, zebra print and cheetah print are being seen on everything from clothing to accessories. Although that's not all, stripes and traditional plaid looks are also dominating. These simple designs are a fun way to incorporate trendy styles into a traditional autumn look.
As seasons come and go, so do the fashion trends that dominate our wardrobes. What was once a summer staple will quickly be replaced with cozy textures, rich colors and timeless designs. Each season brings an opportunity to elevate your closet by finding pieces that will stand the test of time.
