Ashley Hayden, the access and retention specialist for the Office of Institutional Access for the College of Social Science, said the initiative aims to ensure all students have access to necessities that support their well-being.

 “When students' basic needs are being met, they are more likely to succeed,” Hayden said.

The Essentials Corner provides students with resources to support their needs inside and outside the classroom. 

“If you feel that you need something and it's not accessible to you otherwise, this is a great place to get it,” said Emily Durbin, the associate dean for undergraduate studies in the College of Social Sciences. 

The space is anonymous, allowing students to access any items they may need without having to identify themselves, and is available to students during regular Berkey Hall building hours. 

“We have to be aware that our students are people too, and they may have needs that are outside of the academic tasks that we ask them to do, but in order to be successful, students need to know that they won't be without the elements of things in need in their day,” Durbin said.

Students regularly use the space throughout the academic week, Durbin said. 

Those interested in supporting the Essentials Corner can send donations to the Office of Institutional Access in Berkey Hall, Room 442. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Commonly requested donation items include school supplies, snacks, winter clothing and hygiene items such as deodorant or toothpaste. 

Alternative giving options are also available.
