54B District Court Judge Molly E. Hennessey Greenwalt upheld former Michigan State University resident physician Arpit Saxena’s $2 million bond, rejecting a request for a reduced bond of $50,000 on Monday. Saxena’s defense also sought a GPS tether to a local motel room secured by his family.
The court denied the request during the bond modification hearing out of "flight risk" and "public safety" concerns, maintaining the existing bond amount as well as that Saxena must surrender his passport and driver’s license as a condition of release. Saxena is also to remain barred from contact with the victims.
Saxena, 39, was taken into custody on Sept. 10 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia, after an investigation revealed he sexually assaulted two patients at the MSU Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine clinic.
Upon an opportunity to sit down with the victims of the investigation on Monday morning, a preliminary evaluation is being initiated by the State of Michigan. According to Prosecutor Steve Kwasnik, who also serves as Ingham County's Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence unit chief, this evaluation will likely lead to “more serious charges” against Saxena.
The preliminary hearing for Saxena’s case will be held on Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. at the 54B District Court.
