Michigan State’s past and present will share the course as Round of 64 match play begins at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday.
Spartan alumnus Caleb Bond advanced through the first two rounds of stroke play at Merion Golf Club, finishing tied for 33rd among 312 competitors. Bond opened up the championship shooting even-par 70 before ending 1-over 71 in the second round.
Bond’s former roommate and MSU teammate, rising senior McCoy Biagioli, also finished tied for 33rd. Biagioli took the opposite path to get there, shooting 1-over 71 in round one before capping off stroke play with an even-par 70.
Both players finished 1-over par through 36 holes, comfortably securing spots in the 64-player match-play field.
The original field of 312 has been cut to 64 of the best amateurs in the world, with the Green and White representing two of those who remain. From here on out, players will compete head-to-head, with the winner of each match advancing to the next round.
Bond will face the No. 27th-ranked Canadian Justin Matthews in the Round of 64. The two are set to tee off at 12:40 p.m. EST, with the winner playing either 6th-ranked Miles Russell or 59th Ryder Cowan.
Biagioli teed off at 10:40 a.m. EST against fellow Big Ten competitor 20th-ranked Max Herendeen. The winner will advance to the Round of 32 to face either No. 13 Tyson Shelley or No. 52 Carson Bertagnole.
