Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees have begun the process of searching for an interim president, as well as a more permanent presidential candidate, following the announcement of university president Kevin Guskeiwicz's departure last week.
The search process begins nearly a week after Guskiewicz was elected by Clemson University's Board of Trustees to become their next president.
In a campus wide email sent Tuesday afternoon, the board said they will consult an "advisory group of representatives from key university constituencies to provide input about the immediate next steps of identifying interim and long-term leadership for the university" in the "coming weeks."
It is still unclear when Guskiewicz will assume the position at Clemson.
Guskiewicz had shared with the media following the announcement that he would be starting at the university sometime in August.
In an email to The State News, MSU spokesperson Emily Guerrant said that the board has not yet finalized Guskiewicz's last day at MSU as of Tuesday morning.
Guerrant also said she anticipates Guskiewicz will be at the June 12 MSU board meeting in Benton Harbor.
During Clemson's board meeting last Wednesday, Guskiewicz said he would be at Clemson's Board of Trustees meeting, which is scheduled for the end of June.
MSU's board is committed to moving forward and "to create a culture of respect," board chair Brianna Scott said in a Friday interview with the State News.
The next presidential candidate is unlikely to receive compensation similar to Guskiewicz's proposed $1 million salary raise, with Scott saying it would be "improper to take that quantum leap."
The board also says they are developing "criteria and expectations for interim leadership to ensure continuity, stability and effective stewardship of the university during this transition period."
The last interim president at MSU held the position for 16 months. Between President Samuel Stanley and Guskiewicz, Teresa Woodruff held the interim position from November 2022 until March 2024 during the national presidential search.
"MSU has always been defined by its ability to adapt, innovate and move forward together. We look forward to working with the campus community to identify the next leader who will build upon our momentum and help shape the university’s future," the board wrote.
