When the men’s basketball transfer portal closed Tuesday night, Michigan State thought it was safe from losing any players. Apparently, it wasn’t.
In the final hours before the window closed, MSU sophomore guard Divine Ugochukwu entered his name into the transfer portal. Although the portal closed Tuesday night, his entry was not reported until Wednesday morning.
Ugochukwu spent one year with the Spartans. He averaged 16.1 minutes per game, along with 5.1 points, 1.5 assists and 1.5 rebounds. He was a threat from beyond the arc, a consistent defender and provided depth to the MSU guard room.
That style of play was missed in the latter half of the season after his year ended early because of a foot injury suffered against Minnesota on Feb. 4.
This is the second time in his career that Ugochukwu has entered his name in the transfer portal; the first came in early 2025, when he transferred out of Miami University before committing to MSU. With the Hurricanes, he averaged 20.1 minutes per game while averaging 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He will now look for a new home for the third time in three seasons.
Ugochukwu still remains eligible to return to MSU. If he doesn’t return, the Spartans will have two available scholarships they can use in this upcoming portal.
