Students defrosted in the Union Ballroom with a screening of the classic summer blockbuster, JAWS, hosted by the University Activities Board (UAB) on Jan. 31 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The film wasn’t the only thing reeling students in; dirty sodas, cupcakes from MSU Bakers, candy, a photo op, origami, trivia, and an inflatable shark were also lurking in the waters.

The event was nothing short of themed. The dirty soda bar had a shark attack drink featuring red boba and red syrup at the bottom, Sprite on top with blue syrup and shark gummies. The cupcakes had blue frosting and shark fin toppers to mimic a shark in the water. The origami, photo op and trivia were also all shark themed. Students had the opportunity to win prizes with trivia, such as a shark Lego set, a JAWS movie poster or a shark-themed pair of socks.

Advertising management senior and UAB Events Coordinator Hogan Marshall planned the event due to his love of the movie and sharks. It attracted a crowd of around 100 students.

“People seem to really be enjoying the dirty soda and also the shark inflatable,” Marshall said. “We have a really good turnout. It's what I planned for, so that's always good. I aim for making sure there's enough stuff for like 120 people, and I think we're at roughly 100 now, which is like right on. So people can get refills and stuff, just like with food and seats.”

This is the second UAB movie event of the weekend, following a Big Hero 6 movie night on Friday. The UAB’s goal is to provide students with fun, free events where they can relax and enjoy themselves.

“I hope [students] just have a fun time,” Marshall said. “[It’s] something nice to do on a Saturday evening, come sit down, bring your friends, watch a classic movie, and maybe win a prize or win some trivia. Try something new with the dirty soda, make some memories.”

Jaws hit the big screen in the ballroom while the snack and soda table was in service in a side room. Students could make their own dirty sodas, grab cupcakes or fill up snack boxes with candies such as chocolates, M&M’s, Sour Patch Kids and Nerds Gummy Clusters.

Packaging sophomore and UAB volunteer Amare White helped set up the event an hour before the event started and helped run the snack table throughout.

“We just set up, put everything out, made everything look nice, facilitated the snack table [and] made sure everything was running well,” White said. “It's been really good. We got a lot more people than I was expecting, so it's been really nice. [I] can't wait to go in there and watch the movie with everybody.”

Marketing junior Chloe Chapman attended both Friday and Saturday’s movie events.

“I [had] never seen Jaws before, so I thought it would be fun and the food was also a plus,” Chapman said. “I honestly got distracted a lot by the movie because I was doing the origami. There were definitely a lot more people, and there's a lot more food [today]. I liked the giant shark floaty, that was cool. It was bouncing around.”
