Dearest gentle reader, as we enter season four of Netflix’s hit show Bridgerton, we are pulled into the story by the glitz and glam of the Regency era fashion. Aside from the swoon worthy romances that are center stage each season, the fashion has been known to cause quite a scandal amongst fans, and this season is no different.
Being set in Regency era London the series draws inspiration from the silhouettes seen during the early 19th century. This includes women wearing empire waistline gowns and petticoats and the men sporting wild sideburns to show their place in high society. These visuals help cement the time period and aid in pushing the story along. The colors and materials that are used for the families helps the audience see the different characters' social standings amongst the ton.
As the show grew in popularity there seemed to be less dedication to ensuring historically accurate fashion, the costumes grew to incorporate current trends rather than sticking with the original material. This was a common criticism that started with the release of the second season of the show that was followed the eldest Bridgerton brother, Anthony. Designers began to weave in modern day hairstyles and accessories into the period aesthetic which left fans feeling unsatisfied.
This fashion criticism reached its peak with the release of the third season, fans were outraged at the fact that there were characters sporting acrylic nails and curtain bangs. This season even coined the term “iPhone face”, which is a way of saying that the actors looked too modern in their Regency attire.
With fashion being such a huge part of this story fans were weary about the upcoming fourth season's debut. These inaccuracies have been such a scandal it raised the question of if this is truly a period piece or a historical romance wrapped in the Regency aesthetic.
The first half of season four was released on Netflix on Jan. 29, 2026, and from what viewers have seen, the show creators listened to the fan criticisms and the costumes are reminiscent of season one. Although there are still major historical inaccuracies, the elements used to tell the love story between Sophie and the second eldest Bridgerton son Benedict are perfect.
Unlike what has been seen in previous seasons, Benedict's love interest Sophie is not a member of the ton but is rather a maid. This has given fans insight into the clothing details that smaller characters like the maids and butlers wear daily. The attire, even though it’s on the simpler side, is one that shows a newer side to the Bridgeton universe. Sophie has been mostly seen in her traditional maid bun but the colors of her uniforms being much darker compared to the other ladies of the ton further establishes her status amongst them.
Arguably the best looks from the characters this season appeared during the Bridgerton’s masquerade ball. Each character selected a costume-like gown or suit that complimented not only their personality but also their role in society. Some of the best dressed from that night were Queen Charlotte as the Red Queen, Violet Bridgerton as the Queen of Fairies, and Posy Li as a shimmering mermaid. This ball proved to be a blend of romantic elements with the regency glam in a purposeful way rather than distracting.
The best gown from that night and the entire first half of the season was Sophie’s “lady in silver” gown. The silver sparkly gem encrusted gown with matching tulle bows had an empire silhouette that complimented her silver mask and gloves. The dress contrasts with her true identity of being a maid because it represents all of the things society does not want her to be. This dress also gives slight nods at Cinderella as this season is intended to be a retelling of the timeless fairytale. Just like Cinderella, Sophie left a lasting impression on not only high society but also her Prince Charming.
The remaining four episodes will release on Feb. 26, 2026, and fans are hoping that they will uphold the elevated fashion standards that were set in the first half. If the wardrobe of the characters continues to balance storytelling with spectacles, the fashion of the ton will remain not only captivating but gossip worthy.
