Michigan State University will hold classes Friday ahead of sub-zero temperatures expected to hit campus in the morning.
"After a thorough review of local weather conditions, information available through the National Weather Service, and in response to community inquiries, university leadership and the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety have made the decision to maintain the regular schedule of classes, scheduled events and campus operations through the weekend," Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety Mike Yankowski wrote in an email to campus Thursday evening.
"Classes and campus operations will continue as normal, including the CATA bus schedule," Yankowski wrote. "We recognize that winter weather can create unexpected challenges. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts, current conditions, and emergency alerts, and to use sound judgment when evaluating travel and personal circumstances."
The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for East Lansing from 1 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. Friday's weather will be around -4 degrees, with wind chills expected to reach as low as -28 degrees.
Instructors will have the ability to move classes online at their discretion, according to an email to faculty sent by Provost Laura Lee McIntyre Thursday evening, which was shared with The State News.
"For academic continuity, instructors are encouraged to communicate expectations clearly while offering flexibility and understanding for students who may face extreme challenges due to winter weather," McIntyre wrote. "It is the instructor’s responsibility to determine if their course can be moved online or if learning can continue in alternative formats. Otherwise, courses will continue as planned. We have established course policies regarding attendance and make-up work, and reasonable accommodations to support student success during these circumstances are available."
