MSU president Kevin Guskiewicz addresses the general assembly during the ASMSU meeting at MSU International Center, in East Lansing, on Dec. 4th, 2025.
At its last meeting of the semester, ASMSU had one of its most productive meetings, with a visit from Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz, a recap of the semester, eight bills passed and five Registered Student Organizations (RSO) approved to join the ASMSU Activity Department to receive funding starting next semester.
ASMSU President Kathryn Harding gave her first Fall Semester State of the Student Body Address, recapping their productivity over the last semester for the General Assembly (GA). 42 amendments had been passed at the time of the address, and five new GA representatives were elected.
Harding also described the success of ASMSU Student Resources, with 8,565 pages printed for students, 8 short terms loans given out, 279 calculators and 216 iClickers loaned, 625 cases worked on by Student Legal Services and SafeRide provided transportation for approximately 4000 students — a record number of rides according to Harding.
Also noted in Harding’s address was the uncertainty of the current political climate and the lack of clear, upfront communication from MSU administration regarding RSO policy and budget cuts. Harding emphasized that ASMSU will work to provide for all students in the coming semester and beyond.
"Spartans are strongest when we are together," Harding said.
Guskiewicz gave general updates for students, while admitting that the current semester has been challenging with all of the changes happening due to federal directives and new regulations that "may have been painful for many." In terms of funding for CORES & CAMS groups, Guskiewicz said the university is "in no way trying to take away funding," and that Student Affairs is looking for ways to ensure groups have the funding needed for their activities.
Regarding concern with budget cuts for students, Guskiewicz showed excitement for the fundraising opportunities within the university to ensure students are able to continue thriving academically.
Despite challenges faced throughout the semester, Guskiewicz assured students that their health and wellbeing remain one of MSU’s top priorities.
Additionally, ASMSU representatives that attended the Association of Big Ten Students Conference presented their experience and shared what they learned from other universities’ student governments.
Eight bills were passed during this meeting to cap off the semester with a total of 50 bills passed.
62-42: Advocate to formally release statement of support for College of Education and TE 101.
62-43: Amend the GA Code of Operations to increase in-person attendance from the GA.
62-50: Remove the College of Natural Science representative from the GA due to lack of attendance.
The five groups now part of the new Activities Department are: Alliance, Native American Indigenous Student Organization, Culturas de las Razas Unidas, Jewish Student Union and Women’s Council. Office of the President members mentioned that there will be more groups to approve for the Activities Department in meetings to come.
