Daily Wire contributor Cabot Phillips speaks to MSU students at the “Lead Like Charlie” event in Wells Hall in East Lansing, Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025.

Following the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, Cabot Phillips is one of many figures who look to continue amplifying Kirk's message on college campuses. In collaboration with the college chapter of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), they hosted the Leadership Institute 'Free To Speak' event as part of a tour to carry on Kirk's political influence.

"Freedom was under attack and we got up and fought for it," Phillips said. Phillips, as a Senior Editor at conservative news and media company The Daily Wire, discussed the importance of Kirk's influence on young conservatives and the need to continue the movement.

U.S. governmental policies were examined during Phillips' speech, such as the role of mainstream media in portraying the conservative movement, US foreign intervention, the Israel-Gaza war and the role of college education in the shaping and self-identification of conservatives.

Despite disagreements among conservatives on some of these topics, Phillips described them as 'being on the same team,' while emphasizing the importance of holding conservatives accountable.

TPUSA members expressed satisfaction with the event, as President Alex Bitzan said "It was a great event," with an approximate turnout of 50 students. Bitzan went on to describe Phillips as a "great speaker."

As for Phillips, he shows no sign of slowing down and is scheduled to visit two more universities in Michigan after his first stop at MSU. "My goal is to encourage [conservative students], but also challenge them to say, this is going to take not only your effort, but it's going to take you willing to face being ostracized socially…but ultimately encouraging them to realize that that's worth it," Phillips said.

MSU was chosen as one of Phillips' stops as part of his overarching goal to give students who need to hear from conservatives the most a voice, Phillips said.

"When I got invited to Michigan State University, I thought, it seems like a politically active campus that maybe doesn't have a huge conservative movement here," Phillips said. In addition, Phillips mentioned that he was glad for the 'smooth event', as he often encounters backlash from students on campuses.

However, there were students peacefully present outside the room's location in Wells Hall who did not agree with Phillips' beliefs. Linguistics sophomore Frank Jefferies said, "That’s the largest congregation of bootlicks and degenerates I’ve ever seen on campus. Deeply discouraging and horrifying that there are real human beings whose brains consume the garbage spewing from that grown-up baby in a suit's mouth and nod their heads."
