Michigan men’s soccer midfielder Peter Soudan was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Thursday, when the All Big Ten awards were announced. The native of Western Springs, Illinois becomes just the 5th Spartan to ever win the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award and the first since Jonathan Stout in 2022.
Soudan was tied for the team lead in total points with 10, scoring three goals, including the biggest — the winner against No. 3 Indiana. He added a team-high four assists to cap a standout opening season in green and white. He played in all 16 games, starting 15, and was one of the Spartans’ top performers this season, bringing electrifying energy to every game when he was on the field.
Senior captain, goalkeeper Zac Kelly, earned his second consecutive All Big Ten honor with a second team selection. He became the first MSU goalkeeper to win multiple league honors since 2017, playing and starting all 16 games this season with 5 clean sheets.
Midfielder Luke Spadafora received his first honors by being named to the All Freshman Team alongside Soudan. Spadafora played and started in all 16 games during his first season in East Lansing, scoring twice and supplying two assists for a total of 6 points. The two join teammates defenders Brandon Munson, who was named to the All Freshman team last season, and Will Eby, who was named to the team in 2023.
It may have been a disappointing season for the Spartans, but the future remains bright for many players on this team.
