Porter Martone has officially announced his commitment via Instagram to taking his talents to Michigan State University in the fall, making the jump from the CHL to NCAA in attempts of helping the Spartans to their end goal – a national title.

As the sixth overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers selected Martone out of the Brampton Steelheads in the Canadian Hockey League.

Martone joins a stacked incoming freshman class at Michigan State, alongside two other first overall picks in Ryker Lee and Cayden Lindstrom, as well as five other NHL draft picks. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward fills one of two open roster spots for the fall squad.

As the captain of the Steelheads in his most recent season with the team, Martone put on a show with 37 goals and 61 assists in 57 games. As a power forward and an incredible play maker, Martone adds more size to the roster, fitting in with current sophomore forward Shane Vansaghi and senior forward Charlie Stramel.

Martone fits the tone of the future of the Philadelphia Flyers as well, who selected MSU’s Vansaghi in the second round of the 2025 NHL draft. The Flyers also signed former 6-foot-1 centerman Karsen Dorwart, an key role in the program's rebuild for three seasons with the Spartans.

The Peterborough, Ontario, Canada native makes up one of four first round picks for the Spartans on the roster including Lindstrom, Stramel and Lee. He becomes the 13th NHL draft pick on the upcoming roster for the squad. With a single roster spot open the Spartans before the season picks up in just a few months, head coach Adam Nightingale and his staff will look to find that final player to help lead the team back into the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive season.
