"Aug-us-tine" is the chant that echoes through Munn Ice Arena each time the Michigan State University hockey team announces its starting lineup.

Now, the name behind the chant will return for a third year in the green and white.

According to multiple sources, MSU goaltender Trey Augustine — a sophomore and Detroit Red Wings prospect — is set to return for his junior season and help the Spartans chase unfinished business in the 2025 season.

Augustine had the opportunity to sign his entry-level contract with the Red Wings, but after MSU’s season-ending 4-3 loss to Cornell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the South Lyon, Michigan, native opted to return for one more year of development in East Lansing.

The 20 year old made history this past January, becoming the most decorated goaltender in USA Hockey’s IIHF World Juniors history. After back-to-back gold medals at the U20 tournament, Augustine now holds a record 12 wins in tournament appearances.

In two seasons at MSU, Augustine has recorded nine career shutouts. As a freshman, he notched a career-high 44 saves against Wisconsin. This past season, he appeared in 29 games and posted a 19-7-4 record.

Augustine’s return locks him in as the Spartans’ starting netminder for a third straight year, beginning in October 2025 as MSU looks to build on one of its strongest seasons in recent program history.
