Following a loss in the NCAA tournament, the awards and honors are still raining down for the Michigan State University hockey team as three have received All-American honors for the 2024-2025 season.
Junior forward Isaac Howard, sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine and junior defenseman Matt Basgall were all recognized. It marks the first time MSU has had three All-Americans in a single season since 1999.
Howard, who is set to return for his senior season, was named Big Ten Scoring Champion, Big Ten Player of the Year, All-Big Ten First Team and is the winner of the 2025 Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
Howard led MSU in scoring with 26 goals and 26 assists across all 37 games. He ranked first in the nation in points per game (1.42) and finished fifth nationally in total points. His 52-point season was the most by a Spartan since Shawn Horcoff in 1999–2000 and his 26 goals were the most since Sean Berens in 1997–98.
Augustine was a finalist for both the Mike Richter Award — honoring college hockey’s top goaltender — and the AAU Sullivan Award, given to the nation’s top amateur athlete. He has helped lead the Spartans to back-to-back Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, and backstopped Team USA to consecutive gold medals at the IIHF U20 World Juniors.
The South Lyon, Michigan native led the Big Ten with 19 wins, posted a .924 save percentage and recorded a 2.08 goals-against average. He also ranked second in the conference in minutes played with 1,850:27. His 2.08 GAA is the lowest by a Spartan since Jeff Lerg’s 1.94 in 2005–06.
Basgall earned Second Team All-American honors and will return for his senior season. The Lake Forest, Illinois native served as the power play quarterback and a key contributor on the penalty kill. He helped anchor a defensive unit that allowed just 2.08 goals per game — first in the Big Ten and sixth nationally.
Basgall tallied six goals and 20 assists during his junior season, ranking fourth on the team in scoring and leading all MSU defensemen. He committed just four penalties all year, blocked 45 shots and finished with a +9 rating.
